Quote: My kids have no interest in my coins, except to spend them...at face value! I have the same situation with oih82w8. That's why I'm planning to sell my coins at a value in the future than to be spent at a face value by my kids later when I no longer be around!

My younger son is an avid collector; he knows more about US coins than I do, so I'd guess he'll get my VAST collection (gotta be up around two dozen coins by now!). My 12-year old grandson just showed me a giant states quarters book he got as a gift, so maybe he'll have some interest; 12ish seems to be a common age to pick up the obsession...

I'm building my collection with the sole purpose of giving it to my kids when I die (I'm 25 years old now) so that's something like 50 years from now based on average life expectancy. Hopefully a collection worth $10k today will be worth a bit more then, of course using standard appreciation for coin collections, it should be worth around $750k or so.

I am having to put a lot of "extras" out into the market due to a job/location change. It's getting too costly traveling back and forth between households.

As to me, if there are acceptable offers, I will liquidate some 200 errors and variety coins.

I would say the Best Time would be when I am 66 Years Old next March 2012. I'll be able to earn an unlimited amount other than Social Security. I sell Sports and Coin items now. Just think next year I only have to pay the Sales Tax. Same plan on Selling Stock with no Income Tax

I collect coins and bullion for two reasons. 1) I enjoy the "Classic" coinage from the past and I get like a kid at Christmas when I acquire a new piece. I am going after the high-end material and not quantity. I am filling a book of each year for half dollars starting with the Barber collection (Finished), Walkers (1/2) finished, havent started the Franklin set yet and really have no desire to do the Kennedy route. I also collect silver bullion anytime I can grab it. I find that buying Morgans and Peace dollars are cheaper for me than buying 1oz rounds right now as everybody carries a hefty premium on them, not so much for the coins. 2) The collection is going to supplement our retirement. If all goes as planned, my wife and I, will have four different retirements. We will have SS :FingersCrossed: and our pensions from our jobs. We still have alot of farm acreage and a rental house to sell as well. I am expecting silver to be around $100.00 an oz by the time I am 65. I am buying at $40.00 or less an oz now. With 15 years left until I can retire and collect SS, I figure I should have quite a bit to sell off. It is kinda like having your cake and eating it to...

I'm taking mine to the grave with me. No kids or heirs, except a nephew who might be too excited about all of the "vending machine change" that he just got. Maybe I will find a young collector to mentor, and then leave it to them? Don't know, yet. I hope I have a few years before I have to decide.

I voted 45 because I have already started. I started as a hoarder not a collector. As my hoarding has narrowed in scope to one particular type of coin (Call it self imposed therapy)I am gradually divesting myself of all other types. I do have occasional relapses and buy coins other than the ones I want to collect but over the last few years the number of coins leaving have exceeded the number of coins coming in. Since I also married a hoarder this rule has been our self imposed mantra and its slowly working. I have no relatives who would be interested in my collection numismatic-ally they would all want to sell it. So I have told my wife to spend anything not slabbed at face in the hope that it will find its way to a collector who will appreciate it. Heritage will be getting a box with all the slabbed coins. I will not be around to care what happens to them.. Its the fun of the hunt not the having that motivates my collecting.

I can't bring it to my grave. I'm sure I will sell my whole collection at some point and simple start again from scratch.

I won't (at least not unless I absolutely have to for financial reasons). I'm hoping my 7-year old takes it over and adds to it -- he does have some interest which is promising.
