Chriscoinmaster, I recently began cent searching. I have knocked three boxes of so far. MUCH more fun than silver searching.

I too look at each and every coin in the rolls I search. That is why I often wonder when folks boast on here about doing two or three boxes a week. This mean they either have absolutely no life at all or they are breezing by using one of these "lists." I have a full time Monday - Friday job. I might be able to pull off two boxes, and that is if I spend all weekend at my desk searching.

seal006, some of us are retired...anytime it's raining or I need a break from working on the yard, splitting firewood, or life in general, I just sit down at my desk and search Lincolns. I usually have 3 or 4 $50 bags laying around waiting on me.

Where does a person find bags of pennies?, I can only get boxes, so I get two a week wether I go through them or not, I'll get to them eventually. I guess I see bags on ebay, and at premium. I usually separate into jars, then check em for errors later. What I have found interesting is trying to go over a box every week that you just got from the bank. The last week of May, I found more copper in bank boxes than ever before, one roll had 5 wheats in it, 2-25/50 coppers per roll were the norm, and both boxes had shinier coppers than usual, but also with the regular smattering of 09-11 pennies. Last night I was about to throw a 2000 in my toned pile, (I'm trying to put together a 75-present toned penny album) and it turned out to be a WAM. Still, I wonder if the resurgence of copper is indicative of people bringing buckets of coins into the bank again. Still, again, I went through this last Friday's box and am back down to the typical average of 10-15-20 coppers per roll.

I often wondered how people roll searched for varieties as well. Since about every date of cent has a variety I wondered if the people checked each coin with a magnifier or what they did. I don't think that is going to be my style quite yet. I think I am going to concentrate on about 5 coins. I will pull all of those from the box I am searching and check them after I search every roll. I know I have the potential to miss many coins by only concentrating on a few errors at a time, but searching for a bunch of errors seems like it will overwhelm the beginner in me. I can keep adding a new coin maybe every box or so. What techniques do you guys use to check your boxes or bags, do some people check every coin over with a magnifying glass?

What I've done is take small jars, like jam or jelly jars, put a year label on it, and separate them out, if they get full, label plastic bags, plastic tubs, whatever. It's a bit of a mess, and overwhelming, and takes up some room, but I can then go over them by individual date with the stereoscope later, finding the weird anomalies of the year/variety that way. Eventually you get better at spotting stuff, but I am in no way as through as some people are. Still I'll save a quart of pennies, like my 1985d-87d jar, and forget why I'm saving them. I have to browse minterrornews, and figure out what I'm doing once in a while.

I look at the date of every coin and only examine closely the major varieties that I can remember. Otherwise if it doesn't catch my eye it gets tossed aside and re-wrapped. I do however glass quite a bit.

seal006, I drive truck. So I often have down time waiting at stops. What better to do than roll search. Another benefit of being on the road is going into banks in different towns and even a few different states (in my case) daily.

My bags come from coin counters at my credit union.
I'm pretty much like DMan in that I have most major varieties commited to memory, and every time I see a new one posted that I like, it gets added to the mental list.I also do random checks for doubled ears as there have been some new ones popping up lately (Like the 88 doubled ear).

Maineman750, I have not heard of the 88 dbl ear yet. The 88's I have only been checking for the REV of the 89 and vis versa. Hmmmm makes me wonder what I have let pass through my fingers.

dMAN, pretty sure Bob has added the 88 doubled ear to coppercoins site by now..it looks almost exactly like the 84 doubled ear so should be easy to spot if you look for it....but I felt the same way as you...I've got (5)88 RDV-006's now but wonder if I missed that ear

I found a 1999d penny with Wide AM and had it looked at a coin show and was told to have it graded. I'm so excited to maybe have the first 1999d penny with Wide AM.

, you should open your own thread and post pictures of it here, just to make sure of what you have,I'm not saying it's not but the people in ccf are very knowledgeable and will give a stray answer.

You are going to need to make a new thread, and you'll need to post pictures of your coin.
Errers and Varietys.
