Lincolns at WP? WOW, that 's a new one on me. I saw a thread some days ago about an ebay cent described as a W, I thought was a typo. Live and learn, I guess

The only way to know if your Silver Eagles were minted in San Francisco is to purchase an entire monster box(500oz)- the origin info is on the bar code label and the strap seals.

West Point also struck some circulation Bicentennial quarters too.

I don't think there will be any way to tell if they were minted in SF or WP.

And if you bulk submit the unopened monster box NGC will indicate on the holder that they were struck at San Francisco. Yet another cheap marketing trick to get more submissions.

And yes, if they struck proofs they would get an S. They did in the past and I would expect they would again.

Kind of a shame IMO. Don't think I'll be buying into this ploy by the TPG's. Then again I never unstood buying slabbed bullion anyway?!

I don't think I'm liking very much the relationship the mint has with these
large coin companies..

I remember thinking it was stupid years ago when the mint was making pennies at West Point with no mint mark. For some reason (I would love to hear why), the mint decided to not put the 'W' on any coins from West Point made for circulation. I think they said it would cause hoarding of the 'W' coins. I say, so what! I think it would actually INCREASE interest in these coins. Just like the ASE's now. People would want both the 'S' and 'W' mints and they would sell more. But we all know the mint does not think rationally most of the time.

The W mint was pressed into service to fill shortages. Putting the W on the coins would result in no net gain, since most would be hoarded.

Different scenario on ASE.

My understanding was that the 96 dime was the only non precious metal coin minted at West Point.

As for the no mint mark thing. I REALLY dont think there is some behind the scenes collusion between the TPGs and the mint. I can just picture the conversation...

CEO of NGC to head of the mint: Dude, you gotta NOT put a mint mark on those SF ASEs you are going to mint. That way we can make money hand over fist verifying the mint.

Head of mint in response: Dude no problem, we just need a 15% cut.

Oliver Stone anyone?

Please don't guess, google. It takes much less time than having to have others issue corrections.

From 1973 through 1986, the West Point Mint produced Lincoln cents bearing no mint mark, making them indistinguishable from those produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The years 1977 to 1979 saw Bicentennial quarters and Washington quarters produced as well.

Excuse me? I wasnt guessing at anything. I simply stated what I thought was the case. Nor was I stating it as a fact requiring your issuing a correction. Its called conversation.

Like sending on emails that aren't true, it's best to check things first. I'm not trying to bust your chops, but everything posted on the Internet is saved forever, and there's no sense making statements that will confuse future collectors.

well, I'm really glad I read this conversation because I believed the same as smokeriderdon... this clarifies it now: the 1996-W was the first business strike coin to carry the W mintmark... not the first business strike coin to be pressed there.

What part of I was not making a statement of fact do you not get? If I said you are all wrong it was only the 96 dimes, then your statements would be valid. However that is clearly NOT what I said therefor making your statements simply you being snarky.

Speck, yeah, that was my point. I always thought it was just the dimes. Never knew about the pennies or quarters.
