Regarding the gentleman who got the silver nickel dollars and 50 cent pieces from the bank: I am amazed and pleased for him. Please help me understand. I have never seen a nickel dollar or a 50 cent piece in change since I was a young man. Why would a bank have them if they are not presently in circulation? Have at me folks, I must be missing something. I greatly appreciate that you are here to talk to.
Dukester.

to the forum dukester.
It is not unusual to find these at banks. They get hold of them from customers tuning the coins in.I have myself asked various tellers"has anyone turned in half or silver dollars?" Just last year I got 2 half dollar MINT rolls,a few nickel dollars,a few Kennedy halves when I asked one of the tellers+1 Canadian 1960 half dollar.
I assume the banks eventually return non circulating coinage to the mint. I hope this helps dukester
Great one Darryl

That was actually the second time I went to the bank and came back with silver and nickel dollars.
The bank manager told me that when they obtain the silver and nickel dollars etc, they put it aside in the safe and will send them for destruction once they collect a certain amount.
It really is a sin! I hope someone is monitoring which coins and year of the coins are being destroyed!

To Collectall,
Thank you so much for the info on Dollars and 50 cent pieces a bank might carry. I have never asked my bank because I guessed it would be a silly question. Duh ah.........

dukester, always ask your teller if they have any .50 cents or dollar coins, because they would rather sell them to you, than have to do all the paper work that it takes to send them back.....that's what they tell me anyway..

A large THANK YOU to Collectall and Shafta for telling me to ask a bank teller if they have any nickel dollars or 50 cent pieces. I asked and I got 16 half dollars and 52 nickel dollars. This was big time for me. As the teller went to the vault I noticed I was playing with my nitro spray. I have not checked for any varieties yet. I was told the coins were returned by two customers. To all members who contributed to this "thread", thank you.

I wish I had thought of doing this sooner! I went on Friday and got 3 nickel dollars. Not much, but still very cool! I may have to take a day off next week and go to as many banks as possible.....
