BBC is reporting $500 Million (USD) worth of Au. Per BBC there are 2 more chambers / vaults to be opened up.
Fwiw - There are other temples in India that get significant amounts of jewelry as donations which is a Hindu tradition that goes back a few hundred years.
As DVC said there are stories about vast amounts jewelry / gold being buried / hidden in India.

@Brokencompass, yes--several large diamonds have left India under dubious titles of ownership, including the Kohinoor and the Hope diamond. I feel the Kohinoor is their state treasure and should be repatriated to India, but I have no illusions that will ever happen. I would dismiss the tales of Kashmir sapphires as rumor had I not read first-hand accounts from geologists hired to organized the mining of these stones, which are more valuable than diamonds per weight.
Trivia: Until the recent discovery of diamonds in South Africa, India was the sole source, back to the Roman era.
Most of the older crown jewels of Europe came either from India, Sri Lanka, or Afghanistan.
As with any treasure, the weight of metal is just a fraction of real value.

Oh, come on... you know what I mean. Social programs for the poor, health, shelter, food and if you only make a few Rupees a day or have no income at all, 355 Rupees may help a lot! BUT with any kind of programs you know the "Administrators" would be the ones getting most of the money. It's just a shame to see the conditions in some areas of India and see all that wealth sitting in a vault where it might never be used. Just my opinion. I'm not saying I'm right. I know what you meant and I was being a bit facetious, but even if you could do it without corruption it would have no real effect. We declared "War on Poverty" back in the 1960's and we have spent not bilions but TRILLIONS of dollars on that war and after 50 years the percentage of the population living in "poverty" has not changed. Back in the 50's they were running up against the Malthusian problem in India they were reaching a population level where there were more mouths to feed than there were crops to feed them and much of the population lived in near starvation. Then they developed new high yield hybreds (the Green revolution) that greatly increased the amount of food and new medical treatments also helped keep the people healtheir. This meant that a lot more of them were able to survive, grow up, and raise families of their own. The net result has been a doubling of the population of starving people. When the food supply can no longer keep up twice as many people will die of starvation. It didn't salve the problem, it just delayed it and made it twice as bad. I'm afraid any kind of government social program set up to help the poor would have the same type of effect. Allowing more to hang on and increase their numbers until the money ran out and then you're right back where you started but with even more poor people than before.

In India there are plenty of schemes for the poor. Rice in some states is available for Rs 1(2 cents) a Kilo(2.5 pounds). I think no matter how much money the government throws, the population is so high that it becomes almost impossible to satisfy all the basic needs. Besides that the corruption is so bad, that hardly 5% of what is intended for the people actually reaches the intended people. I personally think that instead of feeding them, they should just create plenty of jobs by investing in the infrastructure of the country and eliminate corruption.

Thanks Conder101, I didn't know about the Green Revolution. As you said it helped in the short run, but made it worse over time.
I was just pointing out that with all the wealth sealed in vaults across India, it's a shame that it can't be used to help. I don't have any answers as to how the money could be used, but just to let it sit in a vault seems like such a waste. Now the government will have to use more money to guard it that could have been used for the poor.
brokencompass, The corruption of the system is where I can see big problems. Five percent is criminal, and I'm sure if this money was used the same would happen. It just hurts to see so many people that can't get any help.
It's something that will just sit and help no one.

I must of just spent 30min reading the comments from the first news story. Then From Tokenmast Changing the guard. I read "But the Supreme Court recently ordered that the temple be managed by the state to ensure the security of its valuables
Seems that the people looking after all this treasure were doing a pretty good job, in terms of its still around, if you know what I mean. So is it the new generation is not to be trusted. I know some fathers that I'd trust with my collection, but if it came to their kids...Fugedaboudit lol Or is this the first move to take over or steal the treasure. Either way I can't help but feel my bubble just grew a little. And can any one give a quick break down of the cace or case order, is this where one blood line is better then another. I was picking up on a class order or something from the comments. Something bothersom to read was how the north k? was a breeding/training ground for Terrorist.
