I just started searching nickel rolls. I started with 10 rolls. I already found 1 War Nickel and 2 1968S. Not a bad start, I think.

I have been through about 11 boxes of nickels total and have found 1 1918 buffalo, one 1896 V nickel, and 9 War Nickels.

I just finished my 3rd box and found 12 War time, 8 buffalo (only a couple were legable), 1 proof, 2 38D and 1 39D in it. Have not got to sort them for hennings or double dies yet. Last box only 1 proof. Have yet to find a "V" yet.

tershaffer, those were some incredibly good boxes, where do you live?

Ive searched about 20 boxes during the past year. I have found I think 18 War Nickels, 1 dateless buffalo, 2 common date V nickels, 1 proof, 1 fake 50D, and about 2 uninteresting foreign coins per box.

I'm still 5 coins short of the entire set (38S, 39DS, 43D, 50D). I find about 35 - 40 pre 1960 nickels per box, but most are very common.

it's really the lack of buffalos that is strange to me. I find varied dates at the same rate (or better) than some other who have posted. I also got the 2 V nickels, many haven't found any. I have 1, ONE, dateless buffalo in 20 boxes. Many of you seem to be getting 1 or more per box

I just started collecting: halves, dimes, and nickels. I have had the best luck with nickels, including War Nickels, no buffalos yet. I just went through two boxes of halves that I picked up today and found nothing, so I will be picking up more nickels tomorrow in order to rack up a win!

Okay, you guys got my hopes up and I switched from boxes of cents to rolls of nickels. So far, I've gone through 50 rolls of nickels from local banks. Out of these rolls, there have been a half dozen from the 40's. a couple 50's and that's it, the rest are 1960 to date. Oh, there were a couple Canadian nickels and a 1994 Brazil 10 centavos coin mixed in.

Question for the group, my bank gives me both customer rolled coins and bank rolled coins. I prefer the bank rolls, as rolls that customers have turned in to the bank seem to have more "junk" in them. Then again, gems could be found in either group. Anyway, which do you prefer, bank roll vs customer roll?

I'll keep searching.

Bob,

I prefer coins wrapped by the federal reserve. That way we know they have not been looked through.

In this weekends box I found a 43P silver, a full date 1937 buffalo and 15 pre 60's. Only my third box to ever find a buffalo, however, a few months back I found 13 in one box.

Picked up 5 rolls from the bank on the way home today. Only nickels of interest were a 1957, 1958D and a 1959. The rest will go to a different bank tomorrow for dumping. If I ever find a 1942-1945 nickel, or Buffalo, or Liberty, I'll fall off my chair!
But hey, this is what makes roll searching fun, right?

Radarcoin,

You will find many. Just take your time. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

I found two Buffalo nickels in each of my last two boxes of nickels. And I am not even halfway through the second box!

In response to the question of preference for bank rolled or customer rolled,my BEST finds have been from customer rolls! I had one roll that had 5 v-nickels and 8 buffaloes,5 with clear dates. With cent rolls,I have had 5 rolls of all wheats, one roll being all 43 steels. I was thinning the herd a couple days ago and rolled and returned 10 rolls of pre-1960 nickels to my bank. I keep one roll plus an"accumulating"roll of each nickel but when it gets above that I save the best and roll the rest. My point,I guess,is don't be so down on customer wrapped rolls, there are treasures in them too!
