I just saw your in New York, I'm in Jersey 25 - 35 min from the Holland. I could give you a hand, let you know an honest price for each item. I wouldn't charge you anything. Or payment could be 1 of your Common Date Silver Eagles if you prefer. Theirs a lot of sharks out their. I'd hate to see you or anyone get taken advantage of, especially with something a father loved doing.

The guys a dealer & has to make a profit. With silver at $38 23 times face isn't terribly low. Without knowing more details I can't comment on most of those items & neither can anyone else. The one item I do question is the 15 American Eagle. On the surface it looks like $38 each which is slightly under melt. The notation to the side looks like "1g + silver"...if that means 1 gold then the price isn't close to fair.

One thing. Did the guy say this is what I am going to pay you? Or was this a rough guess? I still think he is trying to run you over (and yes, I understand not being able to pay full value because he needs to make a profit), but the context would be nice to know.

its the dates and condition of the lincoln/indians that could make this a poor deal. The dates of the Proof/mint sets could also make this a lousy deal. It looks like they just gave you a price as if everything were common date stuff and if that's the case their price may not be to bad. The dates of the Peace dollars that you have 65 of could also make or break this deal because it looks like he just gave you bullion value instead of any collector value, there are some keys in the Peace series that could double that price he gave you and out of 65 Peace dollars I am going to go out on a limb and say you probably have one or two that is worth more than bullion value, condition also plays a role in value also on these. Since the Peace dollars are s short set it should be rather easy to separate 65 of them by date and Mint Mark and list them here so we can tell you if you have any key or semi-key dates in your batch

I would get a few more quotes, like 3 more. And yes it should be itemized. Proof and Mint sets are worth more than two dollars each, I don't care what year it is. Shop around.

mike I forgot to mention. We have a consignment option here through the owners http://www.coincommunity.com/coin_consignment/I have personal used them for this and it's the easiest way to get rid of everything and have them sell it for you for a fair price

Hey newyorkmike, Your sitiuation is very similar to mine. Listen to these guys here. They really helped me out. I got over 5 estimates and felt I was not being treated fairly due to my ignorence. I want a buyer to make a profit because that is how the world goes round. But dont want to be raped neither. I decided to throw some coins up on ebay and now after all the fees from ebay, paypal and shipping. I feel I have lost money more than ever. Listen to what they have to say here. I will try another way just to be fair for the buyer and myself.

I too thought it said Peace, lol. The very first item says "Face Value Coinage"... what the heck does that mean? Non-silver coins they are giving "face value" for? Gee, what a deal! I have this vision of $142.29 in US Large Cents and out that they are giving you "face value" for them! Mike, I hear you when you say you don't want to go through very single penny, but you don't want to bury your head in the sand either or you wouldn't be here asking our advice. We have nothing to gain by telling you the truth as we see it... this "deal" is not in your or your family's best interest. There are several honourable coin dealers out there, but this doesn't appear to be one of them. IMO, you need to find someone who will work as a trusted agent who will work getting maximum value for your father's collection for a fair commission percentage. Good luck to you. You did the right thing by coming here. Les

When they say face value coinage they ARE speaking of silver. It is also referred to as junk silver. A dealer will give you x amount times the face value based on the melt value of silver and wether its a 90% or 40%.

Not sure if your in a massive hurry but I suggest you go to a coin store and purchase a thing called The Red Book on coins by Whitman Publishing. The prices are a bit inflated but would give you a really good approximate idea of what you have. Then once you know what you have, it would be easier to accept an offer from someone. In many instances a dealer or anyone will offer you practically nothing if they suspect you have no idea of what you have. Or you could just sit down and make an extensive list of everything as best you can and stick around this forum until you get enough posts to start selling them all off.
