I think it should be graded VF35, however, it wouldn't surprise me if it graded EF40 due to it being a key date.

I say VF 30 also. To get scratches off a slab I use a little WD 40 lightly rubbed on with a soft cloth or a Q-Tip they seam to disappear. Nice coin

Looks like PCGS. I am also calling it VF35. As stated, they tend to bump up the 1877 so, XF40? Great pickup!

I would say PCGS gave it an XF-40 as they tend to overgrade these a bit, but agree with 30/35.

An 1877 in this shape is a cinch for a EF-40 from the market graders.

Everyone was low - PCGS called it XF45.
Yass - thanks for the "Polishing a scratched slab" link. I'm going to give that a try.

I'm really not surprised. It's hard to grade a coin from a single pic, especially inside a slab
