when I was in Vegas a few years ago there were still a few machines that took coins & tokens but we had to ask at each casino, there were usually a few in a small area.

Not that it is in Vegas, but foxwoods in CT uses halves in the stud games, but you can buy them by the roll at the cage for tipping. I grab a roll or two every trip. I once won $1,000 at the table and ask to be paid in halves, the guy said I could use singles to tip and wouldn't give me all halves. He did give me $100 worth, so I couldn't complain.

90% of the casinos in Vegas still use the 50 cent piece because of the $3 dollar and $5 dollar minimum tables. As for the IKEs probably not. Most slot machines don't take coins anymore and they pay out a ticket that you take to either a coin machine or to the main cage and get paid out in paper.

BAck about 10 years ago here in Wheeling west Va. area there was a casino that used to take pennies-Halves in there various machines. I also recall the wheeling downs did up to about 5 years ago. But when I hit on nickles there was too many to sort through. I did like the quarter pay outs easy to spot a statehood tyhat I needed.

Fitzgald in Tunica still use halves for 6 machines. I actually found 3 or 4 40%ers.

I was in Vegas three weeks ago, and I stayed at Luxor and visited Cosmopolitan. At the blackjack tables, there were stacks of halves to pay out certain winnings (I didn't scan them for silver edges, I'd wager that the cashiers or other people pick it out, but I could be wrong). All the slots I've seen have had their coin slots replaced with a cover, and only take bills or vouchers.

Just visited the Las Vegas Club on Fremont Street in Vegas. They have a whole section in the back dedicated to old style coin machines, including dollars (with tokens), halves, quarters and nickels. I won $150 on a Half Dollar machine and cashed out to fill a couple buckets with Kennedy halves. I did an edge check and no silver of course, then did a random date check to see if there were any NIFC's and found none. I did see a bunch of Bicentennials. I checked a few real sharp edges for possible circulated proofs and no joy there.

I took out $100 or so in nickels and checked a few random old-looking coins and nothing interesting. I suppose I would have found some older coins if I really looked. Same deal for quarters, all clad of course, and nothing interesting (aren't any interesting clads anyway....

A couple of the casinos on Fremont Street still have some coin machines, but I only saw quarter machines as I scouted around.

This past summer I was at the casinos in Biloxi, MS and at least on the blackjack tables they were paying out in both regular chips and half dollars. Since I don't play the slots I can't say if there were any half dollar machines there.

Over the course of a week I came away with 4 rolls of halves and didn't find either any silver or NIFC coins. Tried to talk the dealer out of a couple of rolls but without any luck. I even tried to get them from the cashiers and again no luck.

Someone did say that the half dollars are recycled over and over and any silver that would show up is immediately taken out circulation.

I was in vegas in febuary 2011 and most of them still used halves for table games. Its cheaper for them to get those from the bank then have chips made up for them so that probably wont be changing anytime soon

I happened to be thinking about taking another cruise and remembered this thread and a cruise that I took on Carneval Cruises. About 4 years ago I remember that they had nickel slots and they did use US nickels. Not sure about other denominations, but I do remember the nickel slots because my wife likes to play them and she had a couple of buckets of nickels at the end of one our gambling evenings.

I'm going to be taking another Carneval cruise and will have to look into their set up again. That was a very worth while cruise as between the wife and I we won the cost of our cruise in a couple of evenings and then reinvested part of the winnings over the next couple of evenings.

Some things never change....................

Always nice when the casinos can pay for the trip, now only if it would work out like that every time

In New Mexico many still use halves. In fact last time I played I had the dealer sell me and a friend a roll.

Fort McDowell here in Phx is all on a voucher system, at least so far as the slots go; I got all excited when I hit a minimum-bid jackpot on the LOTR game (so sue me, I'm a geek), then quickly got pouty when I realised my forty-someodd bucks was not going to make any kind of clinking, clanking sound. I think the Balrog roared at me, instead, or something.

I don't have any info on Casino Arizona on Salt River--I'm not much of a gambling type. Could possibly ask some folks, though.

HOWEVER--what I do know--is that I will NEVER EVER EVER go to Casino Arizona on purpose! I have only ever gotten two fake bills in my store--guess where I was told, in both cases, the bill came from? AW HECK NO.

Some of those small stand along casinos are pretty shady. I'm sure they know how many times a year the gaming officials will come by and operate with a fairly free reign after an inspection for a while
