Might be real and then again? Your talking about one of the most counterfeited coins in the USA. I'd do as already noted and tell the guy you'ld gladly buy it if you two could meet in a coin shop. It would be well worth about $10 to have the coin shop look it over.

I dont think I would buy any coins offered for sale off of craigslist...and I agree with just carl...have the guys at the coin shop check it out.

This coin has clearly been cleaned...and there might be some pitting. Identifying fakes for the 09-S VDB isn't that tough. Take some material with you if you need it and at least a 10x loupe and have a close look at the 'S' and the VDB.
I've personally sold a $100 coin on craigslist, so some are genuine. I'd low ball this coin though...issues and uncertainty.

What do you think would be a fair offer?

Yes, I agree w/ Carl too. Not sure of what I'd grade it, looks like a VF but a lot of pitting / corrosion. If you're taking Carl's advice and meeting at a coin shop, ask the dealer for his thoughts.

If I can offer some advice, avoid craiglist for any coins. Flower pots, car parts...not coins. Too many scammers.

Yes I'm looking for a new and larger flower pot myself. Other suggestions are to take another chance and find someone on this forum that knows a lot about fakes and is in your area. Have them PM you as to if they too could meet with you and that seller. Contact http://www.coppercoins.com and ask there to look over the coin from that listing. If anyone on Earth knows that coin, it's him. Be carefull of that coin.

My god, stay away from this coin...save yourself the trouble and buy one slabbed by PCGS or NGC....not worth the risk at all.

Coin is a fake! I've seen this coin or ones VERY similar before. Even with the crappy pictures I can tell.

I absolutely agree that is indeed a fake. Artificial toning and you can see the flux around the S and on the off chance that it is legit I would still pass because of condition/cleaned.

Looks fake. Tell him to get it certified and then you will give him an 100 bucks plus what grey sheet bid is. I promise you he won't comply.

Looks fake. The color is just like the Chinese knock-offs made to look circulated.

Check out the PCGS page on this subject. http://www.pcgs.com/Articles/Detail/6062I think it may be real. The VDB definitely looks correct. I can see the strongly slanted B in the image. There are 4 correct locations for the mint mark and this matches the one that sits the furthest below the 1909. There is not enough resolution for me to determine if the mint mark itself looks real, but it certainly isn't the more open fake one seen on the PCGS page. The coloration of the coin looks weird, but that could be the photograph. Again, the look to the rest of the coin is something you really need to see in hand. It kind looks like someone made a half hearted attempt to clean it, decided the gunk/corrosion was too thick and stopped half way. For that reason alone I probably wouldn't buy it even if it is real. If I'm shelling out that kind of money I'd rather wait and save up a few hundred more dollars for one without the problems. If we were talking about $300 instead of $900 then I might be more willing to take a chance on it. If you do have a good local coin shop, he's willing to authenticate it, and the owner is fine with you buying a coin from someone is his own shop (it is kind of a conflict of interest) then do it.
