There are many basic chemical experiments that can raise a thin layer of copper to the surface of a U.S. five cent coin. Environmental toning can do it, too.

Interesting coin. I have never seen a copper plated Buffalo coin before.

You reported that this weighs 5 grams, so that would rule out a copper cent planchet.

Back in the 1930 or so, the US minted coins for other countries, however I cannot think of any that required a 5g copper planchet. a bit of research would be needed there.

But as stated above, your next move is to get an XRF done.
