It does look good.

But this:

SOMEONE FOUND GOLD - SEE ACTUAL FEEDBACK BELOW!

Makes me think the seller is full of crap - nobody ever finds a nice gold coin in these lots. Even the 'least filtered' lots have already been checked 4 or 5 times for valuable coins before they hit ebay.

bobbyhelmet- True. SO other than digging in various parts of the former Roman world is there any way to find uncleaned lots which might contain some rare coins?

I bet they filter out a lot of the silver coins as well.

I'm afraid the boat has long left the harbour for uncleaned Roman or Greek coins. Twenty to thirty years ago - before the advent of the internet I used to see piles of true uncleaned Romans on dealers trays at coin shows. Foolishly I didn't buy loads of them - and they were cheap. Since the internet - knowledge is cheap and the people who find them just don't treat them like a bulk commodity anymore. You might, just might get a rare 4th century emperor in an uncleaned lot - but that's about your best hope for finding something rare. There will never be any silver of gold there unless it's been left in on purpose. The gold is likely to be an Indian fanam or the like - just to spice up the feedback.

The only real hope of sorting through an uncleaned lot is, I'm afraid, to find them yourself. Alas the Romans presence where I live was meager to say the least (though there have been romans found).

Bacchus2- Thanks for the input! Honestly, I have found some alright things in uncleaned lots. But I am getting a bit tired of Constantius II bronzes with the soldier stabbing horseman reverse. It would be nice to see more third century coins in these lots.

Hey archess- this is one of the people I have bought from and one of the reasons I started this thread. I actually bought from grandmas instead of grandpa, but I believe it's the same peoson or husband and wife team. Same location, business name etc. I got one decent coin from a lot that I bought but it had a few chunks out of it. The second best coin is flat but you can kind of see what was there if the light hit it perfectly. The rest I'm either still trying to get the crap off or have turned out to be smooth pieces of metal.

Oh, and I asked a question once and got an extreemly rude answer. I questioned their answer and never got a response.
Overall, not an experience I care to repeat.

tevlon- hmm, well that's good to know. So far I have just bought from Dirty Old Coins. While the quality is decent 99% of the time, I just keep getting a lot of the same type of coin (mainly Constantius II coins from the Eastern Empire with stabbed horseman reverse).

The last uncleaned coins I bought were from Purse of the Legionary and were advertised as "Premium" uncleaned coins. Each and every one is attributable, but I still have a few soaking. The problem is the price. I paid "premium" price for these uncleaned coins. I think I paid near $50 for 6 20mm-24mm AE2 coins. Now I look for coins that are cleaned and attributed coins that cost me $5-$10, and I know I have something I want. Of course, I sometimes spend much more, but I would have done that anyway.

Well I didn't buy very many so I might have been unlucky. I got a constantius II and a valens I believe. My biggest problem was when I sent a message saying that I've had problems buying uncleaned and some people have actually sold me coins that were already cleaned garbage. I then asked if they could give me an estimate of the quality ( they clean some of their own) and the reply was " assume ours are the same as everyone else's" which means to me " I'm going to sell yougarbage too"

That's the conclusion I would come to. I don't think I would buy from a seller whose customer service was no better then that.

Ah, it is against the law then. But I buy directly from a couple of sellers in Serbia. Some of my best coins have come from there.

Why did you have to tell me some of your best coins come from there right after I can't ship outside Serbia. What a tease! Haha. Thanks I really appreciate the offer and will definitely take you up on it if I ever do. Or start a petition to legalize it.

Oh and jw, I just got my dirtyoldcoins order and they're looking very nice so thanks for that link too. This forum has been great. I'm sorry I didn't join earlier

Whiskey is my drink. Well bourbon. Caesar is tempting me. Coins and whiskey.

The dirtyoldcoins are great. Lots of detail. They need cleaning but I can tell what a few of them are and sure enough, guess what I got....... A constantius II with the speared horseman!
