Today many people spent the night in line to buy electronics and toys for a fraction of their regular prices. Instead, I went to the Post Office an picked up a package of coins that cost more than I usually pay for these but my set is getting to the point that I pay more for the ones I still need. That is the hobby as I practice it. At least there was no line at the PO.

They are one each of the two common AE4 Coins of the Great Persecution or Anonymous Pagans. Each was struck at Antioch by ten different workshops as noted by the Greek numeral in the reverse field. I'm trying to get the set and these were two I was missing. I have paid between $6 and $50 for these coins in the last ten years since I have been looking for them. It is not a matter of condition, I find, but a matter of what dealer is selling them. Some consider them special while some see small and ordinary coins of no interest. I have seen some offered for $150 which I consider excessive. These are neither my nicest nor worst examples - just the latest ones I bought. If anyone has the ones I still lack, I'll trade.

I'll mention that there are a few other Pagan types but all are rare to very rare. I only have one. None of these coins are listed in RIC because when RIC Volume VI was written, the coins were thought to belong to Julian II who would be covered in Volume VIII. By the time VIII was written it was realized they belonged in Volume VI (can't win them all). They are listed in Vagi who managed to misspell the obverse legend on the GENIO ANTIOCHENI coin. I guess you could say they are not popular. I'm glad since unpopular coins are cheaper.

I purchased my only "Pagan" about three weeks ago and posted it here. It is the same coin as your first including the workshop. If you had told me you needed it to complete or include in a collection of "Pagans" I would have sold it to you for the price I paid. I'm glad you got one though. Now I am thinking of making a sub-collection of these whenever I find one at a decent price.

The first coin looks like it has the "Syrian red" patina that is so sought after. Is it red or is it golden? Either way, it's a pretty coin. Both your coin and mine have a similar dark spot in the left field on the reverse.

The second coin looks like it can be cleaned a little. Not quite as nice as the first, but it does add to the collection, right?

How many coins would make a complete collection? Including the workshops. Anyway, good on ya. I'd rather have one of these any day, then stand in line all night for some piece of Chinese junk.

Ten shops and two types makes 20 coins. I have two errors in legends bringing it to 22 assuming that there is a Genio from shop E with the mintmark spelled SMA (correctly). The ones I have seen are all AMS from that officina. Vagi lists 5 other types but I have not seen all in person let alone owning them.

I still need the Jupiter type from shops E, Z and H and the Genius of Antioch coin from shop I. I'm not sure why I want them but I suspect the appeal of the coins comes partly from the fact that RIC missed them.

Nice coins Doug! What is going on with the color on the first one? I've seen some others with that patina, but I don't understand what caused it.

If it is what I suspect, it is a desert patina called Syrian Red. It occurs in certain parts of the Middle East where the sand has a reddish hue. I've been to the Middle East, although never Syria. I seen areas of the desert there that have this reddish color. This color of desert patina is highly sought by collectors.
