Mike...

I want you to try this. Put your coins on a black porous background. Black is absent of color so light energy is "absorbed" where nothing is reflected back. Wear a black shirt on a hot sunny day and you will cook! Of course the opposite of this is white where all of the visible light frequencies are reflected back. If you use something like black cloth or black construction paper (non-sheen), your coin's true color will be less altered compared so sitting on other "visible" colors.

BTW...I work for a color measurement manufacturer and lecture on "seeing" color and the variables that influence how we see things.

Take the pics you already have and crop them. Get rid of the excess so that all of your focus is on the coin or the coin in the slab (if you wish to view the grade and specific grading company...which I do!)

Use those GE Reveal Light bulbs angled at 45 degrees and if you can diffuse your light, all ofthe better. I use a milk jug! I picked up this tidbit here:

Very nice Mike. Ed makes a good point on the backgrounds. Black works very well and so does white. Buy yourself some construction paper and try a few different colors until you find what you like best.

One neat trick. Next time you are at Walmart buy some foam sheets. They are an 1/8th inch thick and come in different colors. I use white. Take some coins cent, nickel, dime ect. and push them into the foam to get the correct size. Now cut out the hole, and place the foam in front of the coin you wish to photograph. It will take away the slab look and make your raw coins look professional.
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the tips. I will try to employ them in future posts. The coppers were filmed on a "black sheet" of construction paper. It came out looking very gray due to intense direct lighting! I would not call the paper drop black. It was more of a lamp black, tending towards blue/grey. I spent twenty five years mixing colors as a professional Union Painter. I know all to well how ambient colors react with there surroundings! I've had to explain why the carpet in a room made the wall color look so different from the sample swatch many times! Here's a few that I cropped. Thanks Again, Mike

Mike...ever hear of X-Rite in the color matching industry? That's where my color background comes from.
