I finally went to my credit union and got a $100 box of nickels. When I asked, they said "my goodness"! What are you doing with all those? Before I answered, they asked if I was playing poker. And I said I collect coins. The teller says the new ones? And I said yes and the old nickels too. They mentioned something about the bison nickel and they never seen one before and they thought it was Franklin on it! I had one in my pocket I had just gotten and I showed them then she called all the other girls over to see it since it was not busy. Everybody was talking about it! Also they said they don't get their change from the feds but instead they get them from people who turn them in. She said the Chemical Bank in town does get their change from the feds but I'm not sure if anybody can go to that bank if your not a member.

I find it really sad that the people who handle money daily (for a living) are not even aware that there have been changes to the design.

And our elected leaders think that a new presidential series will make this different. Jefferson has been on the coin since 1938 and still cannot be identified.

I purchased a bag of 500 Philly and 500 Denver Buffalo nickels and since that works out to 12 1/2 rolls per pag, I gave my 19 year old daughter the extra 1/2 roll from each mint and told her to have fun. She put them in with the tips she left and various coffe shops around town (Sacramento, CA) and she had people return them as fake coins. A few people thought they were the old nickels and only two or three knew the real story.

A few I can add to my collection. They will do until I can upgrade to uncirculated specimens.

Were all these rolls hand wrapped or bank wrapped?

Haven't we established that these terms are practically interchangeable? See this thread: How To "Bank" Wrap Your Own CoinsYou know, I find it depressing that there are so many ways to be dishonest in this business.....

These were all hand wrapped rolls. My credit union told me they don't order coins from the feds. Instead they just have what people bring in. David quote: Originally posted by national dealer

Susan,
At least it is easy to spot hand wrapping. Ends pushed together, that sort of thing.
David, I hear this a lot now. Most of the small banks have a ready supply of coins coming in the door. I guess that is proof positive as to why it is so hard to get "new" coins.

Some of you know how long I've been carping about not being able to order coins from the Fed. Well- good news! I was finally told I was allowed to order coin as well as currency!! Woo-hoo! Of course, our other branch has been ordering coin for weeks but no one bothered to tell me about this turn of events. We really don't need to order coin, we get plenty in from the customers (more than enough actually), but now I get a chance to get the new quarters and nickels as they come out. Anyways- interesting mix of coins you found there David- I'm kind of surprised you didn't find any silver. I usually average about one silver nickel a week, and I probably only see about $200 worth in a week. Susan, I'm not really surprised that the tellers didn't know about the new nickels. I had a former co-worker that didn't know how to tell if a coin was silver, she thought all "silver-colored" coins had silver in them... Rachel [:p]

I plan on taking the box of nickels back today. I replaced the nickels I kept. (Kept about 3 rolls worth). But I'm not sure if i'll get another one just yet. It was fun sorting them while not knowing what I would find. There is something about searching coins that feels more rewarding rather than just buying a coin or a set from a shop to fill your holes.
