12mm Coin.....quadrans? - Coin Community Forum

Doucet Pillar of the Community United States 1315 Posts	Posted 12/21/2011 8:16 pm I got this coin in a lot of 5 last spring when I first started collecting ancients. It was simply described as a quadrans. Lately I was trying to identify it closer, 12mm, 1.2 grams, and have been unable to find a quadrans like it. I think it's probably obv. head of Heracles and SC Senatus Consulto on the reverse. Do you think this is a quadrans. And if so, is there any way of knowing if this coin is from the Republian period or the Imperial and what approximate date it was made? Report this Post to the Staff

Bing Pillar of the Community United States 4253 Posts	Posted 12/21/2011 8:39 pm You know, I am probably wrong, but I don't think I have seen any quadrans from the Republic era with an SC on the reverse. I did find an anonymous coin struck under Marcus Aurelius, RIC II 34. It's description is Head of small boy representing spring, wearing garland and necklace of flowers / SC within a wreath of flowers and leaves. This is the closest I have been able to get. I remember that. I sort of tucked it away until I knew a little more about identification. (looks like I should have left it tucked away a little longer). I never thought to look for a different denomination other than quadrans, just went off down that blind alley. Well I know more about them now. The Republican era is out. I was on to Trajan Uncia last night but didn't get as far as bobbyhelmet's pics. Trajan looks pretty close. Also found this picture like the coin JW had mentioned but I think Trajan looks the best so far. Thanks for all the help. Report this Post to the Staff
