I posted the image of this coin under another thread, but it has become evident to me that there may be something different about this coin.

When Gil-galad posted his attribution for the coin, it made me look a little closer. He said he thought it was Cyzicus RIC VII 52 where I had attributed it as Cyzicus RIC VII 63. The problem is the mintmark. Gil-galad thinks he sees SMK epsilon, while I thought I saw SMK Beta. Now I think I may see something all together different.

First there is the problem of the dot in the left field. It doesn't seem to fit with the Cyzicus mint, but it shows up reguarly with the Heraclea mint. Is it possible the third letter in the minmark is not "K" but "H"? If it is "H" then the RIC attribution could be Heraclea RIC VII 96 variant?

What do you think?

IMO I see a K and a B. I think Cyzicus is correct.

Actually, I saw the last letter as a B as well. Only that the attribution ended up with a coin that has a epsilon workshop instead of a beta.

I think it is SMKB which, according to HELVETICA'S, makes it Cyzicus RIC VII 52, just as Gil-galad thought only it is a "B" and not Epsilon. And according to HELVETICA'S, that makes this coin an R3 in rarity. Thanks for making me look deeper.

JW's post confused me because the difference between Cyzicus 52 and 63 is 52 has the dot and 63 is listed with no drapery on the cuirass. The coin clearly has both features and is a perfectly beautiful example of 52. I don't have this coin but I do have a Heraclea 96 which has the right facing bust as listed in RIC. I also have a poor example of RIC 97 Heraclea which is the Constantius II version with left bust. Both show the style of the H quite clearly. H and N are regularly confused but K is usually pretty clearly K.
