I have been watching what some of the new 2012 proof loonies and toonies have been selling for on ebay...one of the loonies just sold for $80.13! WOW! A few have gone for $50.00 plus. I picked up a loonie for $22 and the toonie for $18 because I wasn't going to buy the all silver set. I guess I was fortunate and got them early before most people saw what the set was selling for! I am going to wait for the other proof set to come out. |

C_C: I hope to see your comparison when you get the coin. I did like the geese a lot. I did not like the frosting though. The geese showed the wing feather structure nicely and looked accurate with how many feathers there should be. The frosting blurred the detail though of each individual feather which to me was one of the appeals of the coin... that it was detailed down to each flight feather. The geese did sell out quickly though.

And the artists drawing for comparison from the mints website. Notice each individual wing feather and how they are distinct even on the "little background geese".  Thanks for the comparison pictures in the past C_C!  Is there a crack in your coin C_C... Above the C in Canada? Edited by realpenny

I don't think it is a crack. It is more like a mark/scratch/nick through the frosting. I think your coin just has a thick one.
Is there a fine one under the word gold on yours? I see one at 20x on the one I have, maybe like the fine one on yours - if that is what it is.
I can't notice it in hand - the coin looks better in hand than under magnification. It actually looks like it has some details in hand, but under magnification it is like someone erased a fine line and replaced it with a blurry one.

Yes, I have one also under Gold. And other faint lines around the perimeter.
Interestingly, on the obverse above the "H", there is crack/scratch lining up directly where the one is on the reverse under the "C".

Yes, it's the clamps of the little robot picking it up and putting it's box. Then the mint can claim the coin was never touched by hands and they can prove it by the clamp marks... I kid... :P

It is a nice coin. How do you find it compares to the image shown on the mints site? Do you think the detail is lost due to frosting?
I see the marks clearly. [You have the best example! Maybe you'll win something from the mint. :p]
It is a nice coin though, I am not into ships but it looks good in hand - the best way to look at that series.

Yes, the frosting is crap...too grainy imo. Obviously the mints site has a hard time representing its coins in real time/life of which I have commented to them about this issue. Overall the coin picks up the light on the waves nicely but looking at the rigging detail is definitely lost due to the frosting.
IF the coin was made with more quality in mind I might decide to keep it but this one is going back.

Just received my 2012 proof loonie and toonie from the 99.9% silver set. Waiting for the specimen set to be shipped from Canada Post.
So far for 2012 the loonies I see are:
1. 1987-2012 Silver Plated 25th Anniversary Proof
2. 1987-2012 99.9% Silver
3. 2012 BU (nickel)
4. 1975-2012 Specimen (Loon and chicks)
To come:
5. 2012 "Normal" Loon Specimen (from the baby animal series set)
6. 1987-2012 Nickel Proof (from special Proof set)
7. 2012 BU (plated steel)
8 through ?. ?
