Ever wonder who gets number 1 ?
When coin(s) have a set mintage and you check out the little slip of paper that comes with the coin you just bought, the one that has the specs of the coin, and you see that you now own number 250 of the 25,000 that were minted, have you ever wondered who got number 1?
I'm guessing that it might be presented to the designer or maybe the mint its self keeps number 1.
Just a thought, but I'll bet that one would be worth o whole lot more than the rest.

colorial acres used to have some coins for sale with VERY low COA number, I remember 7 or 6, I never saw number 1

You know, I've wondered about that as well. Who gets the first coin? What about the last?
For the Gretzky coins, did he get coin # 99?

I wonder if the certificate number matches strike number at all

^^^ For some reason I don't think the coins match the strike number anymore or all the time.
I'm thinking for the laser printed coins... does it matter even? I could see low mint number ones say 500 being more closely tracked or the ones with mintage's of 20. It would be good to know.

167/5000 on one of the snowflake coins (subsequently sold it)
closest to the last number
8805/8888 on the heart of the dragon gold stamp (selling at the moment)

Glenna Goodacre said she wanted her $5000 in sackys. The mint played along, even giving hers a special burnish.
She promptly had them slobbed, turning her $5000 into manymoola.

if I remember correctly her burnished coins created an uproar in the coin community also because they were burnished and it took awhile for them to catch on even after PCGS slabbed them

I indeed live in Ottawa and I have gone to the RCM Boutique many times on the first day that a coin comes out. They usually don't have the coins right away or when they do, the certificate numbers are not lower than the ones you get through mail orders. For the low numbers I have, I would say that I paid an average of 15 % above the regular price. About the Jacques-Cartier $20: I bought it from a dealer in Quebec who, I had been told, had obtained the exclusive distribution rights of all the 1,534 coins from the RCM. The low certificates are autographed by J. Marsdon, the coin designer. I saw certificate no. 1 selling on E-bay but he was asking way too much for me. I saw most of the single digit ones on his selling history on E-bay. Not sure RCM would enter into another agreement like this again (if it's true that there was such an agreement). |

Found the 2006 Gold Toonie in a post office with the serial number 00002.That was the reason I bought it.
