A new coin for me, bought from a fellow-collector here. I like toned silver like this.   OBV: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, horned, draped bust right REV: INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG, Elagabalus standing left, holding patera sacrificing over altar and holding club upright, bull lying down behind altar 3.5g, 19mm, Minted at Rome, 221 AD |

Nice portrait. If you're going to purchase a coin of Elagabalus he should be portrayed with large eyes like on this coin.

If anyone is interested in the history of the emperor Elagabalus there is a great book called The Crimes of Elagabus. He makes Caligula look like a chior boy!

Why the Roman military put this guy in power is lost on me.
They did much better with Claudius than Elagabalus.

It is a lovely coin. My Elagabalus sacrificing coin has a couple of additional attributes worth looking out for. It has a "horned bust" and a mention of "ELAGAB" in the reverse legend. The sort of coins that could be picked up for < $50 about 5 years ago.  Martin |
