just wondering I'm looking to purchase most years..eventually
but would it be smarter to buy lower grades of the more common coins, and have more money to put towards high grades for the rarer coins ?
or should I try to have most at a fairly high grade and just leave out some crazy expensive ones?

Don't buy any coin, even at a lower grade to fill in a hole, if you're not going to be happy looking at it later. It may take longer to complete the collection, but in the end you'll be much happier.

In today's market I would suggest MS65 for the common dates and buy the key dates at your comfortable level.

Buy the highest posibble grade that are within your budget.

thanks alot guys this is exactly my thinking. even if it takes longer to save to have most the coins at a high grade , ill be able to look back and appreciate them.

Pick out nice coins, that you like the look of. It is better to see a hole than an ugly coin. Plus, in the rush to get every date you miss out on enjoying each coin individually. I don't have a ton of extra cash for coins so slow and steady works for me and keeps the enjoyment level high. Enjoy your collection and building it, the Voyageur is a great design and the so are most of the "special" coins in the series.

Always buy the best that are within your budget. You can always upgrade from there later on.

When you plan to start a collection, it is important to decide the minimum grade that is acceptable to you. Then, never buy a coin for your collection that is not at or above your minimum grade standard. Your budget will dictate what your minimum standard should be. Go with quality over quantity.

just remember that if you are buying online that you will never get your shipping costs back. an extra $5 or $10 in shipping could you get a nicer coin at a local shop and the investment is recoverable.
i rushed to fill some holes on a large cent set, now as I replace each lower grade coin I am finding it hard to get what I paid for the first ones unless I find someone else who is in a rush. so I end up eating the cost on the first coin (ie my higher grade coin cost me 20% more because I now have 2 coins on hand).
pick a grade and a budget and stick to it. it might take a lot longer but you will be extremely thrilled when the last hole is filled.

My attitude throughout the whole of my collecting experience is to go for the most difficult to find coins first. There is always the risk that if you pass on an oportunity to get a difficult coin, you may wery well regret it later, when it could be out of your price range.

In times past, I managed to build a type set made up of the rarest date for each type. That saved me the expense of having to bother with all of the more common coins.

I made that mistake when I started out collecting. I do not collect dollars (not yet anyway) but I find myself upgrading almost all of my cents because I made the mistake of taking quantity over quality early on....
