Does anyone know what's up with my cent? Is it just so corroded that the design has become incuse? I'm befuddled.

Regards,

The obverse looks like it's been through a Sobel or Canny filter.

If I recall correctly, the minting process imparts greater strength to the metal at high-stress ares like the edges of devices and lettering. These edges are less likely to corrode than the interiors, which had less direct stress during the strike.

Wow! The Poster Child for corroded old copper. That one looks like it has been immersed in salt water. I like SuperDave's theory.

Yeah, SuperDave's theory certainly makes sense. And I'm glad okie-colin mentioned salt water- this coin looks like cleaned-up cannonballs that have been residing in salt water for many decades (my dad collects those!).

texasmick, your geekiness is truly a force to be reckoned with!

That one was definitely dug out of the ground, most likely along the east coast. I've seen several just as bad or worse. At least you can read the date on that one!!!
