Just wanted to know how to tell the difference between a regular 1996 toonie and a German Planchet

There are hard to tell apart especially once circulated. The German planchet has a dull matte finish whereas the Canadian planchet has a shiny oily like finish.

yeah, ICCS won't even grade them below MS-62/63 because any disturbance in the lustre on these coins makes them virtually impossible to tell apart.

ICCS no longer comments on whether a 1996 Twoonie is a German Planchet or a Canadian Planchet. I spoke with Brian late last year and said it is too difficult to do it consistently. A Canadian Planchet with strong die polishing marks can easily fool a lot of people. CCCS still will do it though.
