That's a tough-one ... I can't quite tell if it's Emperor Ringo or Emperor Gerge?

Julian-II-Fallen-Horseman-Ae3

... but it certainly has some eye appeal!!

cool coin! I have a very similar julian ii but my obverse bust isn't nearly as sharp.

I'm going with emperor paul...

Interesting coin Jess.

Lyons RIC 198 GSLG in exergue is the only possibility according to Dane's pages with this obverse legend.

-Kurt

It refreshing to know that a goofy haircut doesn't preclude you from being a major rock star OR a Roman emperor!!

I really love Julian's hairstyle!

The interesting thing that sets this one apart from many is the M on the obverse. The M series was very late in the history of the Falling Horseman coins and issued by most mints but more put the M in the reverse field rather than the obverse. There has been speculation that the M indicated that this coin was valued at 1/1000 of the gold solidus but I am not convinced that this theory will hold up to investigation (or how we are going to prove that one way or the other). Many coins have field letters that supposedly separate them into series but how they relate to each other is not clear to me. M series coins tend to be little and junky so this one is really quite nice for its peer group. Full strikes with full legends are not easy to find.

My best fallen horseman AE3 coins.
These are the smaller versions of the fallen horseman coins but they still have lots of details and although they are very common these are some of my favorite coins in my collection. The details can't be really appreciated except when enlarged on a computer screen.
