Commems Collection Modern: 1993 Battle Of Normandy Set

As many folks here on CCF have come to know, I enjoy collecting the various holders/packages in which US commemorative coins have been sold/distributed. My interest in such holders includes those used for the classic as well as the modern series of US commems.

One of my favorites from the modern series is one that was put together by The Battle of Normandy Foundation (BNF) back in 1993. It is a fairly elaborate full-color eight-panel cardboard folder that provides informative highlights of the European Theater of Operations in World War II. The folder fits into a colorful protective slipcase (first image below); the set also includes a National Geographic World War II map of Europe and North Africa.

The coolest part of the package is the interior panel that contains the US WWII silver dollar in uncirculated as well as the WWII commemorative silver one franc coin from France (also in uncirculated). Also, included is a bit of sand from the beaches at Normandy and Anzio -- sites of Allied landings and fierce battles. Nice touch!

I like the design of France's coin and think the BNF put together a terrific commemorative set by combining it with the US coin. I like joint commemoratives and I like special commemorative packaging -- this set combines the two!

I've never seen any numbers regarding how many sets were assembled, but it does not appear nearly as often as either of the US half-dollar sets produced by the US Mint (shown below). I would estimate that no more than 10,000 BNF sets were produced.
