I have 2 silver sets with the same strike thru. It is on the buffalo proof. Does a strike thru on a proof lower the value of the set? I would think this to be a minor strike thru.
It doesn't lower the value of a set, but it will affect the coin's ability to grade anything higher than PR68 at PCGS...which may kill some people's desire in owning the set. Minor flaws like this that some people insist on calling errors only get in the way of having the killer, nearly perfect coins that most people look for.
Little struck-through problems, tiny die cracks, and small imperfections due to die wear or other normal parts of the minting process are all within the mint's tolerance for making coins. They pass the quality test and are sent out to collectors with the mint's knowledge - thus they aren't really errors.
Thanks coppercoins, when I purchased these sets I kinda liked having the struck thru coins. Thought they were pretty neat. Now I kinda see it as messing up my set being that they are silver proofs. I want my proofs to be as pretty as can be.
