Does anyone know what caused this? I suspect die cracks but I have never seen straight ones. and the color on the straight ones is copper/gold/brass looking. The reverse has no problems. Thanks for the help in advance. Image: full.jpg30.88 KB Image: close.jpg19.36 KB

Toning? Scratch? A die crack typically doesn't have a special color, and it just is too straight.....Can you get a closer pic?

I don't think it is toning, they all appear raised. I can't get a better pic until later, my GF took the camera to her mothers. One side note, the curved line in "liberty" appear to skip over the letters, but the straight lines appear on the letters where they cross, and they go across the rim as well.

Don't really know, but it's a cool coin.

A die crack through the letters should appear on the letter. Closer pics are definitely in order. I'm keen to see this.

No telling from the images provided. They need to be lit with more contrast and the camera needs to be closer to the coin. It looks like it may be double struck, but it's too hard to tell from your images.

I'm wondering about the possibility of a rolled in shear edge. Sometimes when they punch out the blanks there will be a "tab" left attached to the edge of the blank and this tab gets rolled over onto the face of the planchet in the upsetting machine. When it is struck it looks a lot like what I am seeling here.

I took this to a coin show last weekend, the dealer I showed it to said the straight lines were gouges in the die it was punched from, put there by a worker for some reason. The other lines may be die cracks, but someone wrote over it with a pen. is it possible that acetone will take this ink off without damaging the round?

cpfull, Acetone will not damage the coin and should remove the ink. However, if it was written on by a pen, the ball point may have left a scratch under the ink
