I have been looking at this quarter for a few days, trying to figure out if I should buy it. I have not purchased one before, I guess because I have no album that requires one. Today I picked it up .. thinking maybe I would send it into NGC sometime in the future. Or maybe Dansco will create a slot for it in their new 7070 type set album. I have not read up on this series, so know nothing about varieties and only guess at what the grade might be. If some of our expert members have any information on this coin, that they would like to share .. please post it.   |

looks like a B-3 but yours looks to have a faint die crack from the bust through the tip of the 1 in the date, to a denticle under the 8 which may be an unknown variety, id estimate it as VG10 to F12 it may go 15 based upon eye appeal

id throw it at a bust quarter specialist, may be unknown or possibly just a later die state. nice looking quarter either way.

Nice acquisition! I've long felt that Dansco should put hole in their 7070 for this type. IMHO, this 1819 is easily a F-15 and might even slab as a VF. The reverse is surely looks VF. Nice surfaces and gray color, too.

I like it as a VG-10 but it is close to F-12 because of the reverse. A very eye appealing coin!  |

I think this coin looks better in hand and the die crack does show better in hand then in my pictures.  Looking at the coin more, it looks to me on the reverse that the "5" in 25 is re-punched .. not sure what to call it .. 5/5 .. 5 over 5 .. the 5 under looks smaller to me  |

Taking another look, there is die crack on the lower part of the third star, third star up from the bottom of the right side.  |

Nice coin! A lot of these old bust coins have die cracks. They must have used the dies till they fell apart. I can't remember right now when the steam presses were put into use, but I'm pretty sure they were still using screw presses in 1819.

Thanks muddler - The guy who had this coin, had it in a small box with a bunch of
foreign coins. I just had to save it from a non collector.

The use of steam presses started in 1836, I believe.

Very nice coin. Lots of hair detail, this one looks F-15 to me. Nice original damage free coin.

Nice one, problem-free and attractive. The 5 certainly does appear to have been repunched and that should help identify the particular variety. I don't think I've ever heard of such a coin before but I expect it must be well-documented in references for this series. If it is a new discovery it would be a really good one!

Where is the best place to get in touch with a expert on this coin.
If sent into NGC would they put the variety?
Is there good book or online site that might have information?
In hand it is easy to tell what looks like a repunched demonination (25 C)
mostly the 5, a little bit of another 2 can be seen at bottom left of the 2.
Also has the die crack coming straight down from the 5 to the rim
