Off the back of seeing how happy JWarper was with his owl tetradrachm (and not being able to see one of those in OK condition for less than 3 times what he paid) I decided to buy this tetradrachm to go with the drachm I bought last month.

These coins are also very pricey, some inexplicably so but this one I felt offered a fair balance of quality and price. I was tempted since multiple times I picked it out as a good value possible coin and tonight I fancied some dancing fruit of my own!

Alexander-III-Tetradrachm

Alexander-III-Tetradrachm

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III., the Great (336-323). Tetradrachm. Macedonia.
Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin. Rev: Zeus A•_"tophoros seated left; in left field helmet and monograms. Price 629a. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 17.0 gm. Diameter: 28 mm.

After searching the net I think I have established it is Amphipolis mint (going by a scan someone made of the price references in a thread about a different coin)

Now I just want payment to clear and for the postman to wake me up wanting a signature...

Wow, what a whopper!

I got it through the post today... it was in a large fedex envelope and inside corregated cardboard.

When I opened it up I was surprised just how heavy and large it is. My previou drachm surprised in me in the opposite way (it was smaller than I expected)

Anyway I am pleased with this one, in hand it is very attractive and I think I did well on price since I have seen similar for many times more than I paid :)

My next coin maybe I have seen... but its another expensive one, I will have to wait a little to afford it.

Very nice find, much along the line of what I like in a coin, fat, detailed chunky ancient and silver.

Another 5 fruit salute....
