I'm trying to find a source on line similar to CoinFacts or the US Coin Facts on this site but for British coins. Is there such a thing? So far I'm not having much luck. I'm interested in all periods, Medieval and modern.

In lieu of that, what would be the first book I should look for?

Two websites that always seem to come up whenever I do a Google search on information on British coinage are:

Tony Clayton's site for British coinage, a collector site, light on pictures but lots of info. His homepage contains a good list of British coin books.

Chard Coins, a dealer website, has lots of good info as well as the sales pitches.

There's also Wikipedia; the coin articles seem to be getting better in recent months.

Hi there Jan

Try to get the book " Coin yearbook " it is a valued book in my literature and it covers most of the English, Irish, Scotish, the Isles, from 1066 - date if you get the latest edition, there is quiet a lot of information from dealers to auction houses, to anything for the British and world coinage.

Christie's and Spink cant be wrong can they?

I spend a lot of time browsing Chard myself. They're an excellent source of information for my budding Sovereign collection.

Jan, if you get seriously interested in collecting British, you need to get a book called "Coins of England & The United Kingdom, the Spink Standard Catalogue of British Coins", commonly referred to as "Spink". It has information on virtually every coin ever minted in England and the U.K.

Thanks, Josie.

Tom -- as soon as I can afford that book, I'll probably get a copy.
Rest in Peace
