I got to thinking; with the amount I spend on groceries, wouldn't it be great if I could dump some quarter rolls shopping? Maybe not an entire box, but a couple of rolls each shopping trip. I thought 4-5 rolls at a time might be reasonable. So yesterday, I decided test the waters. I went to the store I do my usual shopping. I picked up a few items and headed to the checkout. Most of the cashiers recognize me, including this cashier. She rings up the items and gives me the total - slightly over $10. Me: Would it be a problem if I payed with a roll of quarters? - handing her the roll. Cashier: Uhhh. No it should be. She picks up the phone and calls the manager. Cashier: I have a customer here who wants to pay with a roll of quarters. Would that be OK? Uh huh. Uh huh. I see. OK. She hangs up the phone, unrolls the quarters and starts counting them. Meanwhile the line behind me is getting longer and longer. Me: I thought it would be easier for you, if I rolled them. Cashier: We've been burnt recently with a lot of rolls. We have to count each one. There goes that idea. I guess the same people selling rolls on ebay shop at my grocery store. Has anyone tried and had success dumping at places other than banks?

I did that once at a Bar-B-Que joint with 2 rolls of halves. After explaining what half dollars were for about a minute he called someone and asked if it was OK to take them. I could hear the person on the other say yes that they were pure silver and were worth a lot of money and to ask me if I had more. I wound up dumping nearly $200 worth of clad halves on them.

some cashiers will not count them. Some wont even take them. I handed a roll of halves through a drive through window and she broke it like cash! Thats what a lot of cashiers do. It all depends.

Sometimes I call the grocery stores to see if they need change at the customer service desk on sundays. I have gotten rid of $100 at a time in dimes, quarters and pennies. I know thats a small ammount compared to some of you guys but you might try that.

Good for tolls if you have to drive through those a lot. I think the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel is $17 now. A few trips through there should help

When I was with the Bank of Montreal in the late '80s a teller got burned by taking in a huge lot of rolled washers. After that we were told to unroll each roll to check. I didn't do that, instead just using my thumb nail to make certain there were reeded items in each roll. I never got burned, and I hated rolling coins (we didn't have coin rollers back then)!

I like to use loose halves or dollar coins or to buy coffee or for other small purchases. I always get a laugh when someone asks what they are or says they have never seen them before. Oh and eng they work well for tipping gas station attendants.

Every Stop & Shop around here in Central NJ has a Coinstar which either takes 9% for cash in return *or* takes 0% if you take a gift card for Stop & Shop instead.
I've never taken advantage of that, myself though, as my Credit Union has a free Coinstar, itself. :-)

Hello, Self-checkout machines at Walmart or Safeway are what I have used to dump halves, quarters, and sometimes even pennies.

I have 23 bank accounts in my area, and I have designated "dump locations" and "roll locations". Some of the bigger branches, like wells fargo and bank of america, are my dump spots, because they offer free use of their automatic coin machines if you hold an account with them.

I don't spend cash. I get 1%-5% back with my credit card. With $500 in free money reward that can be redeemed at 1.5x to 2x face value. I am sitting at up to $1,000 by using a credit card and not cash. It is WAAY faster to use a credit card as well versus "let me check." and waiting. (Time=Money also).

But then you don't get change!
Actually, I am looking into going back to plastic as well unfortunately. My wife and I need to start building credit. The only thing is I NEVER want to pay interest so we will be paying it off after every use.
And I will miss getting the change because you never know what you're gonna get!

I still use a credit/debit card at times, but my credit card has dropped to only 1% cash back. That's why I "joined" the Project $100K club I spending these dollar coins on groceries, food, gas, and most things. My enjoyment makes-up for the 1%.
