Forgot to add that it was 224000$ + fees, so well over 250000$. Just to say that, if your collection focus on this sort of currency, your the kind of guy that needs a chauffeur to get to the wc !

Dionysos- wow, is that even really a coin? I mean, it weighs nearly three pounds. If it is, what is the date and issuer of that coin?

Archraz, it's from the Roman Republic, around 215 BC. The denomination is a decussis wich, according to the sale info, is the equivalent of a denarius (4 g of silver !!). Interesting write up on the thing here... http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=383536

Sale page says only 4 examples are know and this is the only one in public hands, anyone know where the other three are?
I would guess the British Museum and the Smithsonian are good bets but thats all it would be, a guess.

I agree, the design is not particularly pleasing. Perhaps sir would prefer a Roman currency-bar from 250BC? http://www.britishmuseum.org/system...s%20signatumWeighs in at 1746 grams, you wonder at what point it was just easier to carry your livestock around as a form of payment.

Those are really cool examples of the extreme end of weight. I imagine being cast bronze accounts for the lack of details.

That Signatum must be worth it's weight in livestock nowadays. Very impressive
