Just curious as to how many other collectors on this board have their coins listed in either the PCGS or NGC registries. Personally, I find that the registry brings out my competitive side, and I enjoy seeing how my collection stacks up against the best sets in the world. I'm currently working on a PCGS silver dollar set (Leaky Canoe Silver Dollars for those interested in taking a look), and hope to one day build it into a top 5 set. Tell me about your registry building experiences, and feel free to brag about your collections in the process

On PCGS. Working on Lincoln circulation strikes 1909-1958.

I have several sets on the pcgs site. One of the things that I like about it, is the ability to get the real time pop report for free when you have a set, just by hitting the "what if" button, which then brings up the current populations. I've found that to be invaluable at times. It's also fun to see where your collection matches up to the others'. One instance where it was advantageous to have a set was with the release of the 1914 5¢ hoard. Before it was widely known that the hoard had been graded, I happened to notice that my 1914 MS 65 went from having zero finer, to 98 finer. That clearly let me know that a massive number had just been graded, and to be on the lookout for the deluge.

My nickel dollar set is on PCGS. I am deliberating whether to put my small cents there...

jokingjoker - what is your set's current rank? I'd like to see them.
Yoda -- I've spent far too much time on the "what if" feature of the PCGS sits. Usually I'm creating dream sets, but it has been extremely valuable in evaluating future purchases as it lets me see the population numbers of various coins. I have in the past actually created created extra sets for the sole purpose of acquiring population data.
SPP -- If your small cents are anything like your nickel dollar collection, I'd love to see them...

On the registry topic, does anyone know how PCGS (or NGC for that matter) comes up with the weighting for the individual coins? While I think their numbers are mostly correlated to a coin's availability, there are a few head-scratchers. I think anyone who has assembled a silver dollar set will tell you that the 1945 is much harder to find than the 1938 in the same grade (and the prices back that up), but they're assigned equal value in the set composition.

I remember hearing that when the PCGS registry was being created, a Canadian expert was recruited to assign the weightings. If my memory serves me correctly, that expert was Sandy Campbell. I agree with you that the weightings are off on some of the coins. For example, the 1921 5¢ is weighted just a fraction more than the 1914 5¢...yet you could acquire at least a hundred 1914 mint state 5¢ coins for the price of the finest single 1921 5¢!

Does anybody know if the weightings are ever adjusted? I would think in light of the new 1914 hoard it deserves to be reassigned to the lowest score in the silver 5 cent series. If these numbers are adjusted, how often are the adjustments made?

I know that in the USA registry, the weightings are not adjusted unless there is consensus within the ranks of those who have sets in that category. I've seen the registrants organize themselves, and contact BJ Searles to advocate for change. Then, if I understand correctly, she contacts the other registrants, and if they agree, then the weighting is adjusted. From what I've seen, the Canadian Registry is quite a bit less active, competitive, and organized that the USA side.

TY reference set - proof twoonies - PCGS
Not competing on the other $2 series in PCGS because they mislabeled a good number of coins - like a 1996 graded MS 69, but the coin is a gold proof (how can a real MS compete against that?)
Was on NGC until they decided to eliminate coins not on NGC holders.
