t_y has a collection of "garage coins" like this. At the September Coin Expo in Toronto, he spent a good amount of time with Geoffery Bell (the auctioneer) to show him how clever some manipulated coins can be. I think this opened lots of eyes, so hopefully, we don't see fabrications in future auctions.

I am inclined to think this coin was plated. Dunno what with, but nickel plating is a favorite. Where the plating has failed, the edges of the plating are ragged. If the coin had mercury rubbed into it, the mercury would have amalgamated with the surface interface of the bronze underneath. Mercury forms amalgums (mercury alloys) with other metals under pressure contact at ordinary temperatures. If this was a mercury amalgum surface, there would be a very gradual and even fading from a silvery looking surface into a bronze surface, at the places of highest wear.

1 cent coins were the favourite in shop classes - cheap and easy to plate. Kids would plate them with whatever was available in school, have good laughs and then spend them.
In my collection I have gold and silver plated pieces (probably jewelry work) and the very common nickel plated.
I want to use this post to warn all: there are a good number of cases of twoonies plated with the intent of selling to collectors. CAUTION when approaching "all nickel" twoonies, or unimetal pieces! The most common fake pieces I saw are too shiny to look real, weight a bit over the normal 7.3g and have a magnetic ring with a non-magnetic core. All fake pieces I handled, I scratched the core to make sure they would not go to naive hands.
