Well the postman has finally delivered the last of the coins I purchased over the Christmas week. I hope that you don't mint but I thought I would share them.

The first is an Antioch mint Gordian III. I bought this purely on impulse as I don't usually buy Gordian III ants. but when I did (in the dim and distant past) I was trying to obtain eastern issues. This one called out to me and was cheap enough not to pass by.

Gordian Antoninianus
Obv:â€" IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate draped bust right
Rev:â€" P M TR P II COS P P, Providentia standing left with globe and transverse sceptre
Minted in Antioch.
RIC 172.

It wouldn't be me if I hadn't also bought some eastern denarii of Septimius Severus. I already have plenty of examples of the first but only have a poor, chipped example of the second. I shouldn't have bought them as I really didn't need them and the money could have been spent on something else but sometimes we just get carried away with things.

Septimius Severus denarius
Obv:â€"IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:â€" MONET AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales in right hand, cornucopiae in left
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 - 195
Reference:â€" BMC 380ff. RIC 411a. RSC 330

A strongly struck example with good detail. The obverse is a little off-centre but otherwise pleasing.

Rev:â€" • T • R • P • III IMP • â€" • V COS • II (first I in form of Gamma), Two captives seated at base of trophy
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 195
Reference:â€" BMC 410. RIC 435. RSC 658

Beutiful coins Martin. I usually don't go out of my way for Gordian III coins, but this one is exceptional.

Interesting bust of Gordian III--that may be one of the least imposing portraits of a Roman emperor I've seen.

The Emessa issues of Denarii of Septimius are especially nice as they mostly commemorate in one way or the other his war against Pescennius Niger which ended in 194 AD.

Below is an example I was lucky to buy last year, it was also recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website.
