Hi! Everyone,
I recently bought a few RCM commemoratives coins in a pawn shop: 1999 year of rabbit, 2001 year of snake, 1999 Macau, 2000, transportation- the Toronto. I paid only $40 each and they are all one oz silver. I also bought a few maple leaf coins with privy marks and I paid more than $45 each.
So, do you think I should spend money on those cheap commemoratives coins or bullion coins?
Thanks for reading my posting!

Good prices. I would since you are paying 8-9 over spot...

I think it comes down to why you are buying the coins.

If purely to invest in silver, I would seek out silver Maple Leaf bullion coins (without privy marks) as they should be able to be purchased for just a few dollars over the spot price of silver. Regular issue SMLs are also very easy to liquidate when you choose to sell.

If you are looking to start and build an attractive coin collection comprised of silver coins, then purchasing commemorative coins that you like and/or special edition SMLs with privy marks would yield the most varied and interesting collection. As you have experienced, many older commemorative coins can be purchased for around the value of the silver they contain. This is generally due to the fact that there isn't strong collector demand for many of the issues. Collector coins without much demand are unlikely to appreciate much in value beyond increases in the value of the silver they contain.

I actually need the two zodiac coins you have for my set, if you are interested in trading/selling. LMK.

Regarding buying advice, are you a collector or an investor? That is the most important question to ask up front. You can mix work and play, but only for so long, and so much.
