For an answer need to change test machine to TFDwall
as it measures precisely the induced current force.
test coin 1938 results
50,52,53
test coin 1940 results
53,53,51
test coin 1963 results
52,53,53
test coin 1944 Henning results
39,41,42
test coin 1944 US war interestingly results
53,51,51
human error accounts for 3 point spread on repeated results
edit for; results from three tests on each nickel

That is very interesting and I applaud your inventiveness and inquisitiveness.
But I don't know how much utility it has. Of course if you lined up 100s of 1944 nickels there are easier ways to spot the fake!
Where it would be really useful is if you could discriminate a henning from a regular circulation nickel, like pyrbob says.
If so it could be incorporated into a machine like the coin-roll-hunting guys use and you could scan a huge number of nickels.
I have never heard of TFDwall so guess I will have to research that!

Henning nickels are a very special case. A very small difference in induced magnetic field,
compared to genuine nickels, at about 15% more force. Yes there are easier ways to spot likely ones in a large group, once you have done that. Then this may be of help.
TFDwall is being introduced here on CCF for the first time. It stands for True Field Detective wall model
A precise way to spot off metal counterfeits . While the Henning is close, others I have found are not.
It can read through silver plate, and test a coin still in a slab.

It would be interesting to see if all my 1944 Hennings and two 1939 Hennings are consistant with the readings. How do you make one of these?

I would also be very interested to find out.
My data base for Henning's is 1. Ha!
Perhaps I could send you a TFDwall, you do the testing, post your results here, and send it back when done.
That would work for me.
The array is simple to build, TFDwall not so much.
A magnetic attraction test (array) could give info on 1944s
but not 1939s. Both dates being non magnetic (so far), genuine and hennings.

Here is an update to this thread. Ken sent a unit to me and I took a sampling of readings of my Henning nickels along with readings of a sampling of late 1940's and early 1950's nickels. My readings were very consistent.
1944 Henning nickels (I ran 10 of them and the readings range was 79-82
1939 Henning nickels (I have two) readings of 80 & 81
Regular circ US mint nickels date range of 1946 to 1954 (quantity 10) reading range of 70-72
So I could see from the readings the unit could distinguish the small difference in composition of the Henning Nickels.
Thanks again Ken for sending a unit to me. It was very interesting to experiment on the Hennings with it.

pyrbob So glad you could do testing on your many Henning's. TFD's data base on tough alloy now greatly expanded!  Thank you. As you know I disagree with ANA's assessment of his dies as a poor transfer copy. Maybe they were looking for something in MS64  . His passed.  |

ICG might do it. I doubt you could get ANACS to do it and I am about sure PCGS and NGC won't.
This TFDwall device sounds interesting.
