2004 - 2005 Jefferson Nickel Proof Coin & E-Bay Sellers

SilverTracker Pillar of the Community United States 589 Posts	Posted 03/15/2013 4:51 pm Hi All, I just saw a few e-bay auctions that have the 2004 - 2005 Jefferson nickel commeratives being offered. I messaged the 2 sellers and asked them if they are truly proofs and they both replied yes and that they took the 4 coins out of the US Mint casing using cotton gloves and placed them in plastic pocket folds for shipping. Are these still considered proofs by definition? Also do you recommend I stay away from these type of auctions and just buy the set off e-bay that are in the US Mint casing? commems CCF Master Historian of USA Commemoratives United States 12311 Posts	Posted 03/15/2013 5:06 pm Yes, they are still considered to be Proof coins; if they get damaged while being handled they are considered "impaired" proofs. Bottom-line, once a proof, always a proof. Whether to buy the coins you referenced is a matter of what type of set you are assembling. Many collectors purchase proof coin singles and are happy doing so. I wound up purchasing a set of proofs that were PCGS certified a few years back, but wouldn't have an issue with "raw" singles.
