Wow. It scares me that there are fakes this good out there also! As someone who collects CBH's, I like to think, I would have caught it. Since there is only one die pair for the date, it's pretty easy to tell...... If you take the time to compare or look at the book. Thanks for sharing and reminding all of us to stay on our toes! I hope you are able to work out a satisfactory conclusion.

I would hope/think that if you had the coin in hand there must be some other obvious factors that would point to the coin being fake, right? If it's just die characteristics, this hobby is in huge trouble. I would guess that the coin surfaces look odd (in hand) or weight is off, or something that we're not seeing in the pictures.

Any chance it's an ultra rare newly discovered variety?

Hey everyone, just wanted to update you all. The guy I got this coin from said he didn't realize it wasn't genuine and has offered me a similar value in common AU Morgan dollars, so it looks like things will work out okay in the end. Lesson learned!

with Prethen. Ruling out coins as fakes based upon just known die pairs doesn't sound right. I assume that all die pair have been discovered at some point, and other might have not been discovered yet.

On older coins it is a very good first step. The last new early date large cent was around 25 years ago. The last Middle date was close to 20 years (the recently rediscovered 25 N-5 was first discovered in 1882 and not seen again until last year) There hasn't been a new Half Cent since probably the 1940's or 50's. (the last new edge sub-variety was maybe 35 years ago.) Early Half Dimes I think there have been one or two since the late 90's. Early dimes I think there has been one since the Bust dime book was published in 1984. I don't know about the early quarters, but there have only been I think three new early halves in the past 40 years and all of those were in the past ten years I believe. I don't think there has been a new early dollar since 1950. Maybe one. So if you have a early coin that doesn't match any of the known varieties odds are REALLY good that it is a fake.

that odds are tending towards fake, but it's not right IMO to call such coin a definite fake.

"Definite fake" may be an inappropriate term, but "possible new variety" is also misleading. Not impossible, but an extraordinary claim. And extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Quote: but it's not right IMO to call such coin a definite fake. Well, consider: With a total mintage of 47,150 (a number easily achieved by one die pair), this is the absolute stopper for the lettered-edge series. A coin in the condition pictured here would be worth something north of $3,000. They were minted on the spur of the moment, because the War of 1812 had caused silver hoarding and there wasn't enough silver deposited at the Mint until late in 1815 to even consider production. They just grabbed an 1812 die pair (probably what they had on hand), punched a 5 over the 2 and went to it. The coins weren't delivered until January 1816. They've been sought-after by collectors ever since, and subject to an enormous amount of attention given their status. Between that and the extremely low mintage, this is one issue we can reasonably expect to have no remaining surprises as regards to the dies.

And this would have been a high dollar coin, How many AU Morgan's would it take to match the value? Good luck .. I hope it works out for you. I mean this in a nice way ..
