I was given an 1876 CC Trade dollar by a friend who has had it for a while. It is pretty scratched up. I have read that Trade dollars are the one of the top most faked coins, so I want to see if I have the real deal. I don't know much about Trade dollars, so I need some help. It weighs 27.2 grams and is not magnetic. It also passes the drop test (sounds exactly the same as a Morgan that I know is real). Can you tell if its real or counterfeit? If it turns out to be real, could you give me an approx. grade? Edited by DobermanOwner 06/10/2013 12:49 am

It APPEARS genuine to me, you know the weight. There are great experts on here that can help you further though. We only have a few of these, they are a great part of our history. Congratulations.

I don't like it at all. I cannot say it's a counterfeit based only on those images but it doesn't look good. Here's your coin compared to a genuine piece graded XF40 by PCGS. Review the details of each, there are a few red flags.

Looks OK to me but these are heavily faked so best to get it certified

Is it worth sending in to be graded based on its condition? Its got a lot of scratches on both the obverse and reverse. Some didnt show up when I scanned the coin. I'm guessing this thing was cleaned. It was also stored in a large pickle jar with hundreds of other coins.

Doberman thats a 200+ dollar coin in G4 which that coin is much nicer than if real. Really any Trade dollar is worth sending in to make sure its real with how counterfeited they are. Compared to the other one there are some red flags but I cant tell you its 100 percent fake or that it didnt have a mint mark added to it. Unless it can be proven to be fake without a doubt its definitely worth sending in

The denticles are pushing me away from calling it a legitimate example. I'd love some larger shots so I can really compare the details.

No bad for a free coin! I had my RedBook with me when I came to pick up the jar. All he wanted was the jar, so I emptied it and out pops this baby! I offered to give him $100 bucks for the coin, and he refused to take it! He wouldn't even take face value for the other coins. He just wanted them gone and was happy to see that a collector was getting them and that they weren't going to be sold. I love my friends!

I will try to get some better pictures. All I have is a scanner and an iPhone. No fancy camera or microscope. I get off of work at 5:30am. I'll try then.

The only major difference I see is in the mintmark. I assume that there are a few possible mintmark positions, but I'm not an expert.
I'd definitely send this one for grading, unless someone here could clearly rule it out as fake.

with supdog, the mintmark is what jumps out at me. I also agree with having any Trade dollar Third Party graded for authenticity, ANACS would be the least expensive (no clubs to join).

Doberman, Looking more closely at the bottom rim on the Obverse, that's looks quite odd to me. If I compare yours to one of ours, or BH there is an obvious difference to me now that I didn't notice before. The glaring one is the MM which others here have stated. Try to get better pics if you are able to.

The denicles on the obverse are inconsistent, and the rim looks funky, too. Also, the arm holding the banner doesn't look quite right... IMHO, I believe it is a counterfeit...

the rim is what caught my eye at first glance. I am pretty sure this one is a counterfeit. You pretty much have to approach any Trade dollar as it being counterfeit and then prove its real

I think it's a cast counterfeit. Recalling similar posts and Steve Caruso's comments, several things make me think this:
- thickening of various devices (wheat heads, for example)
- flattening of the devices (stars and branch on obverse)
- the denticles are grainy and shortened
- ragged line around rim in some places
- some areas of porosity which can be a casting artifact (example-- left of date)
