Circulation '76 halves were made at Philadelphia (NMM) and Denver (D) San Francisco made three types of halves 1. Uncirculated (non-proof) collectors coins -- all of these were 40% silver clad. 2. Proof 40% Silver coins 3. Proof copper-nickel clad coins So what jack jeckel said is true. All silver coins are S mint mark. If it is an S proof, however, it may or may not be silver.
