I have found Canada post to be very high, even with VentureOne. I've shipped from the US to Canada for about 1/2 the price (Blaine-Montreal $8 USPS instead of Vancouver-Montreal $15 CanadaPost).
I have used ship saver to insure, the cover coins up to $1000, easy process, reasonable price and conditions.

Thanks guys, it's very informative. It was my first time sending something parcel size. I've only sent a few letter mail the last year. I don't use the post office, with all the electronic ways of communication. However, I want to start selling some of my older coins to buy new ones with the money. I use free shipping, so I need to find out the cheapest prices for shipping. It seems box size doesn't really matter. I got 3 poster tubes in a box 3' Long x 12" across, it was only $22 from Nova Scotia. This is what's confusing, you'd think the package size would cost more. Yet I send 1 poster tube to Manitoba for $18.25, and the coins were way smaller. I wish they had a simpler way of calculating shipping. I find it mind numbing! Too bad it's not so much for sending something up to 500 g any size within reason. Just don't get how big business sends things for free and makes money! I understand the region pricing and agree, but the rest you need Einstein and I'm not one.

If want tracking for around 10 bucks in Canada you can go either Registered or Small Business Expedited (Venture One). You can ship "anything" registered within Canada. The "paper only" rule applies only when shipping outside of Canada. The difference between the two is that if your going coast to coast Registered is cheaper then SBE and opposite if you're within a province or two. "Tracked Packed" is currently the cheapest USA bound trackable product at around 16.00. The biggest problem is shipping coins to Europe with tracking. There is no product for a reasonable price. If you're shipping untracked under 100 gr/<2cm. it's 1.34 + tax in Canada and Light Packet for 2.65 to the US.

@pocketchange50, On CanadaPosts website the rates and prices section show evelope sizes and weights and what is max before having to ship in a box or whats classed as a parcel.It may help, but agree for the most part you are always searching!
It would be nce if the would just have a flat rate shipping box of a few sizes with insurance.
Everyone would know exactly what the costs are.
You would also think that with all the online purchasing going on that CanadaPost would want to be more customer friendly as well as cost effective!

This in fact has not been my experience - over past 7 yrs have shipped out literally hundreds of letters (containing valuable coins) by Canada Post "registered mail" - absolutely 100% reliable, fast, and most affordable method of meeting the tracking and signature requirements for PayPal insurance.
No need to buy additional insurance if you comply with PayPal requirements - in the RAREST of events, if shipment went missing in transit you are completely covered for value of sale.
And in fact, depending on which source / who you talk to at Canada Post - their policy in regards to insuring "coins" is somewhat ambiguous - and "coins" may be deemed to be uninsurable and / or difficult to collect on insurance from Canada Post - which is not the case with USPS.
And their are lots of reasons, which time and forum don't allow, that the cost of postage in Canada is higher than in other countries around the world - but the reliability of Canada Post is second to none.
Re shipping to the USA - it is quite common for mail to get "stuck" in Customs for fairly long periods of time. Scott's Canadian Coins

You must remember that with Canada Post you're also paying a warehousing charge.

@scotts cdn coins, I am not saying everytime that this is the issue, but have heard that the registered mail route isn't the same as it used to be. If sending coins out, do you traditionaly send them in a box or bubble envelope? Bulky items require more expensive means, as it always seems that RCM packaging gets damaged when the coins are sent out in a bubble envelope rather than properly sent cushioned in a box. |

Almost every package we send within Canada is well above $15.00 and we get a "dealer rate". I've actually had customers mad with me when I request $6.50 for shipping an item to them.

So what does Canadapost consider a dealer rate cost wise?
Also through a dealer rate is everything insured regardless of cost?

I ship all larger items and higher value coins and likewise items anywhere in Canada for between $8-$12. The current insurance rule with respect to coins via CPC is a $500 maximum. Max total insurance for non valuables is $5000. Take it for what you will, no one at CPC ever asks what the content is for the purposes of insurance. Most dealers that ship higher values have their own insurance.

Just wondered, what the different kinds of shipping insurance is with regard to cost. It appears that this is what drives up the cost of actuap shipping, not the shipping costs themselves

I ship all of my USA orders from the USA. Way cheaper! Make the trip once a week.

@Gatewest, IMO $6.50 for shipping is very reasonable!I don't know why someone would get mad at that, but I guess some people are never satisfied. Just wondered if anyone has used the shipping insurance,or could recommend a company that would charge on per usage.

In my experience (and also the way I read Paypal's terms, and also the way the Paypal rep explained it to me when I asked) this is not true. Paypal ONLY reimburses the seller if you have Proof of Delivery. In case of loss or damage during shipping only insurance will reimburse you. Occasionally, if you get the right person at Paypal on the phone and you do enough business and you create enough of a stink Paypal may make an exception and reimburse you but I wouldn't count on it and it will take you 2-4 hrs on the phone. |
