1839 flavor here, my first Reeded Bust Half. This one's going straight into the 7070. Can someone with more knowledge of the series enlighten me about the ST in STATES? Can I get EF for this one, do you think?

I am not a big fan of the Gobrecht design but, that is a great looking bust and I wouldn't hesitate with XF+. I hate to change the subject, I have to ask about your Kreuzers and Thalers.
I am quite fond of these early coins even though I do not own one. All of the examples (of Spanish Reales)I have encountered display great detail for their age. They all seem under-priced for the age and history behind them.
I think an informative thread is in order to educate the masses (mainly myself) on these coins.

No idea whats going on with the ST. I think it would easily go XF45, lots of great detail, especially in the hair.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for this?

WOW SuperDave, its a nice bustie!! I think it'll definitely make EF. Anychance there's more where this came from? I'm looking for a reeded edge for my type set too.

Nice details in the stars and hair. Leading edges of the wings show just a bit of wear, but the feathers on the wings are clear and whole except, perhaps for the trailing edges of the primaries. Solid strike. Perhaps some evidence of a long-ago cleaning on the obverse, but overall a wonderful coin. I would be comfortable buying this as a strong EF-45. You've got a winner!

I'm the wrong person to ask; those are just a beginning for me, and I'm hardly an expert. This is something we need to lean on TwoKopeiki for, I think. quote: Anychance there's more where this came from?
Nope, sorry - it was his only Reeded Bust half. He's got a really nice, strong XF 1836 for $110, if I recall, but it's marred by a divot in the reverse field at 9:00. quote: If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for this?
$170, and happy to go there. I generally don't pay retail for coins, but this one was the exception. Later that night, I saw this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/1839-capped-bus...de_W0QQitemZ190124225774QQihZ009QQcategoryZ11969QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem In my opinion, that was a major rip for the buyer. I found it after the auction ended, or I'd have bid over that amount.

Definitely strong EF in my opinion and would probably slab AU. The ST looks like a weak strike issue or maybe struck through a very small amount of grease. It looks to me like there is a very slight weakness in the left arm of the A also. Do you know if the left shield outline is doubled on all of these? I don't have any reference for varieties on dates after 1836. I don't know if there are even any recognized, actually.
