The larger one is a Bowhead whale (sometimes called a right whale) not a Blue Whale

Yup, from the looks of pictures you are correct again. Good catch.

i received my coins today from the mint but got no cards with them, was I supposed to..?

I had to request for the collector cards from my mint rep, I don't think they will be sent out with orders placed on the mint website. The mint has been pretty generous lately so it might be worth a call to see if you can get some sent separately.

I got 3 of them on my last trip over the border. Normally I get rid of the plated steel garbage as fast as I can spend it, but I saved these 3. The whale design is really well done.

I think the whale design should replace the caribou as the standard design for your 25 cent coin. Much more modern and really attractive, therefore it won't happen.

@ Fed_Ink Those pictures did help. I re checked my roll of quarters and there were 2 of this variety in it. So looks like it really does exist. Not sure about the sets from the mint that people have been saying that doesn't have this variety but looks like you get it when you get a roll. Mind you, I only have 1 roll. May have been lucky or it is the way it is. Don't have a 2nd roll to confirm for everyone. Someone else find this in a roll?

what this boils down to is there are 3 varieties of Arctic Symbols:

Type I: lower whale BOTH fins frosted (normal)
Type II: lower whale only SMALL fin frosted (normal)
Type III: lower whale only LARGE fin frosted (this is the exception)

everyone agree?

I really want that RCM set of the whale quarters. The other design I would just pick out of the holder and spend them. Too bad they only ship to Canada.

I just received my RCM packages (with the collector folder, which I didn't ask for) in the mail today. Here's what I see (or think I see). Of the 12 whale coins, 6 have the lower part of the big whale (except the lower part of the jaw) and both fins frosted and the other 6 have the lower part of the whale's jaw, only one fin and both small whales frosted. Does that sound right?

My set arrived a while ago along with the two frosted coins. They're very nice.

So, now I've time to check all the coins I received from the Mint but I'm a bit confused.

According to some posts, there are 3 types of the whales coin. Someone has a picture of the 3rd type? Is this one that's listed as an error: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-Canada...321287845022 ?

And finally, what's mean the different "Pod" ?
Here is Pod F: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-CANADA...221341947284
And here Pod H : http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-CANADA...221345493015
