Can anyone clue me in as to rarity, desirability and value of this variety? I've a line on one, and I'm attempting to learn enough to make an informed purchase decision.
1857 1C MS64 ANACS. S-4, FS-002, DDO 2-O-I. The CA in AMERICA exhibits the boldest doubling. Snow-4 is very similar to Snow-3, but the varieties are promptly distinguished by the eagle's wingtip near 1 o'clock. Snow-3 is from a broken wing tip hub, while Snow-4 is from a missing wing tip hub. This flashy near-Gem has a good strike, clean surfaces, and attractive rose-gold color. (#2016) (Registry values: N1793)Sold for: $1,035.00.
Thanks, Benji. The example I'm considering is visually very appealing, and (I think) 3 points overgraded in a PCGS AU58 holder. The asking price is close to twice the going rate for a "standard" AU55 example. Run, or gun?
I would post your question on the EAC or Fly-In site if you have time. I am bust man. It should be listed in the cherry pickers guide(I just traded mine away). If it were me I would run AND gun. I always regret hesitations. NOTE: I have no knowledge as to the value or rarity of this coin.
Hello SuperDave, This variety is valued at twice the standard price of the non variety version according to Rick's attribution guide. It's a pretty scarce coin in any grade, but more so in AU or better, it sound like a pretty fair price to me.
Thanks very much, Dave. You were precisely the type of person I was looking to attract to this thread. I love this place. And, Benji, you sure are Bust Man.
Methinks that this coin will be the next addition to my typeset.
