The reverse design looks odd - can anyone place this one or is it not a real piece?

It's quite large.. sorry I don't have the measurements handy, but it's a little larger than a US quarter and about 3 times as thick.

Thanks for any help!

That's a cool coin Renee! I'd say it's genuine.

Thanks It would definitely be cool if it is. I just can't find a Hadrian with a Fortuna reverse like this.

Nothing really looks off to me. I would wait for FR though he knows bronze and orichalcum better then probably all of us.

If I am seeing everything right it is RIC 760 someone else can correct me though if I am wrong.

Awesome.. yes that one does indeed look like it. And if it is Ric 760, Whizb4ng, that would clinch it

On wildwinds: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigp...ian/RIC_0760 - design looks similar but Fortuna's posture is way different if that makes a difference. It also looks silverish.

Your original link of http://www.kersh.com/product_info.p...ducts_id=318 shows it as the same color as mine.

Just a poor picture and the reverse if turned slightly would be closer.

Here is another under the RIC 760 listing that looks more similar to yours. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...C_0760.2.jpg

If it has been reported as being only
"a little larger than a U.S. quarter",
then it is about the right size for a dupondius (double assarion).

The color of the metal is right for both the sestertius and the dupondius. Only problem is that the Emperor on a dupondius is normally depicted wearing a radiate crown, to distinguish the orichalcum dupondius from a bronze as (assarion).

We really do need some accurate information on the diameter and the weight.

What looks like tiny file marks on the edge have me a little bit concerned, especially in the left part of that picture.

I can get it out tomorrow and get an accurate size and weight. Don't 100% quote me on the quarter - my memory is going along with my eyes, but I do seem to recall it being around that size, and much larger than the 'normal' ancients I have.

Very impressive coin. Almost certainly a sestertius based on the thickness I see in the photo. I think the coin is genuine from what I see but because it is so beautiful I would want a better look. This is an instance where the absence of any flan crack makes photographic observation slightly more difficult. Some people don't like cracks but I actually don't mind them so much. They can make the verification a bit easier. Cracks are hard to fake. But as they had not yet become common during the reign of Hadrian we must do without. A few rasp like marks on the edge don't bother me too much either. One might imagine a young (rich) lad impatiently waiting while his father haggles over price on a used chariot playing with one and scraping on the stone steps while he waits to visit the candy store.
There is an anomaly at 2 o'clock on reverse that bears some observation. If it was 'cast' this could be the sprue area disguised as an imperfection. I don't think it is only pointing out a possibility.

Over all I am about 90% satisfied. As mentioned in the grading forum I like a bit of 'thick' patina (preferrably with some coloration) This one has almost none and what I see is basic black. But it has much to be excited about ! Which is also why it deserves close inspection. Being excited about a coin is the best way to get fooled.

While I am here lets give it a grade too.

High end VF on the FR scale with some obvious wear. Well centered with reasonably clear legends. Great eye appeal and excellent artistic style (sometimes Hadrian looks a bit different but this really captures his persona)
