@Cruisinfusion: I can't explain it either. My best guess would be some type of acid corrosion. All that remains of this poor penny is a brittle, nearly empty shell. I'm keeping it for now because I find it symbolic of the debasement of our coinage.

I can't remember if I posted this a couple years back or not. I used to explore and photograph underground tunnels and sewers. I've come across a dollar bill and a couple modern nickels I grabbed. You'd be amazed at the stuff that gets washed into storm drains (or thrown down there): Coins, credit cards, street signs including the post, 30' sections of guard rail, guns probably used in crimes, toys/action figures, etc. While waste treatment plants are places where a lot of that junk shows up, much of it sits at the bottoms of tunnels where rocks and grit build up preventing it from being washed away in big storms. I have a feeling that metal detecting in a drain could potentially uncover some very interesting finds....especially when some tunnel at least in my city go back to the late 1800's.

Trent, I forgot when I was in Los Angeles in 1961 and my newphew and I would go to the normally dry LA river and walk the tunnels under the streets and we would find all kinds of stuff that washed down the street drains. Some good some not so. But fun for us kids. More junk than coins or cash though

My family went for a walk yesterday and I bent over to pick up a penny. My 4 year old son thought it was so neat he biked faster to get a head of us so he would be the first to find the next one. He ended up finding 2 more. So we are now 3 cents richer :)

Find a penny heads up on the ground, pop it in your Left shoe. Good things will happen.

I found a 1991 5p lying in the road during my lunch hour today. It was about EF with no recent scratches or damage, so obviously hadn't been there long.

I have no problem picking up a cent, you never know if it's an error or a variety and either way it's still one cent.

Bingo. That's the correct answer, in my opinion.

Also, I save money I find and stick it in a jar and donate it to charity at the end of the year.

Actually I convert most of the coins to bills and donate the bills. My top year totaled $29.75. Last year was $9 and change and I donated $10. Kinda fun.

I've found wheat cents, but never a really valuable one.

Yesterday morning, during the course of my usual 15-minute walk from my house to the office, I saw a shiny bronze coin lying in the road and picked it up - it was a 2010 penny, a perfectly normal find. Then I spotted another shiny bronze colored coin a few yards away and picked that one up. I thought it would be another penny, but it was a Finnish 2001 5 cents!

"A penny saved is a penny earned." So all pennies I pick up I consider as being saved from going into the storm drain. Less work and cost for the city to clean them out, clean them up, and put them back into circulation. Got 3 yesterday when shopping at different places. That is free tax on a loaf of bread!
