Quote: You know, I think that AMPEX knows exactly what they are doing. $200 is cheap in the world of advertising. I'm sure they knew that many collectors talk to each other. Words gets out that things like this are in, and I guarantee that they see more than a $200 boost in business. I think you are right. Even if it were a mistake, it is one they could and would easy absorb.

Perhaps--if they were certain somebody would both 1. look for and 2. find that key coin. However, consider the sheer volume of bulk silver coins passing through their business--do really they have the time to check every.single.coin? I seriously doubt it--this is simply payoff for the OP's work--congrats again!

I gotta agree with the above, I mean they are just going through a ton of bulk and it happened that this one got through, if they even decided to check for it. I mean, there are only two Washington quarters worth anything, does it really make sense to pay some guys to pour over what is probably the bulk of the silver quarters coming in? Probably more efficient to just ship them out the door and not bother. Even if they were trying to seed them, how do they know a collector would get this group? Seems to me that it would be equally if not more likely that a person who was just going to store these would get a hold of it and never open it up. Nice find for sure and a great windfall!

I would work there for free if I could look through all of the junk silver that comes in and go through it before they bag it to resell in exchange for a small finders fee or freebie once in a while.
Same thing with Loomis or Brinks: If I could watch the bags being dumped and pick the silver and split it with them I would be rich.

APMEX does cherry pick but like mentioned they just deal with a massive amount of product. It would cost more in salary to hire everyone necessary than it does to just let something slip out every now and then. I highly doubt they were trying to slip a gift in. Theres not much they would gain. For every person that would announce it theres 20 more who wouldnt say a word with the intention of trying again. A give away would make more business sense anyway. If you order something between such and such date youre eligible to win one of 10 quarters type things. Thats assured publicity while possibly driving sales up. It more than likely just slipped through. doesn't mean they have idiots working there, they just missed it in the pile of thee thousands of coins they were probably going through.

Can we get a better focused picture of the reverse? The S looks odd to me.

Looks UNC to me. An acetone rinse might perk it up. Please don't tell me you had enough ebay bucks to buy 2 rolls...I'd be way too jealous Let me ask a stupid question. How did you have ebay bucks to spend 3 weeks ago? Aren't they only issued quarterly, Jan, Apr, July, and Oct, and the buyer only has one month to spend them? Like I said, hope it's not a silly ? Canadian rules must be different.

Great find!
And I agree it was either covert advertising or else a slip (tending toward the latter).
I remember years ago when I was working at an LCS as a teen that half of the fun during the down time was going through the bulk silver and other coin buys the owner was just getting rid of. It did not pay him for his time to go through every coin that came though the door. I got my 38D/S Buffalo this way - and at a very reduced price.
This concept was again related to me by my LCS now. Cherry Picking is something he does not have time for. I shudder to think what was probably melted in the last silver rush.
