1874 Germany 20 Pfennig Struck Through Error

GEKO Valued Member United States 136 Posts	Posted 04/02/2014 5:42 pm I had this one for a while, but didnt notice the error this coin has. its a 1874 20 Pfennig from the german empire. I noticed the outlines of the eagle on the reverse, appears to be struck through But I am not sure how this happened and what kind of error it is How would you value this ? SeriousCERES Valued Member United States 365 Posts	Posted 04/03/2014 12:15 am 'struck through' denotes a very different kind of incident; this is a die clash, where the dies had struck each other without metal prior to striking this coin and in the hit or clash the dies transferred detail onto one or both dies. Thus the obverse details are visible in the reverse and vice versa. A struck-through error is one in which a noticeable flaw in one side or the other of the coin has been generated by the presence of some other sort of material on the planchet when it was hit by the dies. Often grease or other lubricant material may interfere with the quality of a die strike and leaving a noticeable trace on the surface of the coin. Report this Post to the Staff
