I believe that I have found some really old silver coins, but they are really corroded. I think they are pre 1700-1800 Any tips on cleaning them or a way to check if they are silver?

Will post pictures soon, do not have my camera right now.

We need pictures before making a judgement. What sort of coins are they? If they are not ancient I don't think they should be cleaned.

Pish said it! If they are modern I wouldn't attempt to clean it, very little good could come of it. Pictures will best help that determination.

One of the reasons people have liked silver for millennia is that it doesn't corrode easily. If your coins are "really corroded", then it seems to me that they're highly unlikely to be made of silver. Not high-purity silver, anyway.

Here are the coins. They were found in water while metal detecting.

Ah. That might do it.

But in this case, they are not silver. Nor are they, technically, coins. These are brass jetons, or counting-tokens. This page on the UKDFD website tells their story and shows examples.
